Shane Steichen’s name appearing on a list of NFL coaches facing pressure should not come as a surprise. That does not necessarily mean his job is in immediate danger, nor does it erase what he has accomplished since leaving the Philadelphia Eagles<\/a> following the 2022 season. It simply reflects the reality of coaching in the NFL, where patience is often in short supply.<\/p>\n That’s the nature of this business. Results are expected quickly, and coaching is a nomadic profession. Recently, Pro Football Focus identified several head coaches entering the 2026 season on the hot seat.<\/p>\n Among those mentioned was Steichen. This isn’t the first time that has happened<\/a>. His Indianapolis Colts<\/a> have yet to take the next step from playoff hopeful to legitimate contender. The designation highlights what could become the most important season of his head-coaching career. That mark may not jump off the page, but it only tells part of the story.<\/p>\n The Colts have roster turnover and uncertainty at the quarterback position during much of Steichen’s tenure. Despite those obstacles, Indianapolis has remained competitive more often than not.<\/p>\n Last season appeared particularly promising. As mentioned, at one point, the Colts looked capable of emerging as one of the AFC’s most dangerous teams. Injuries, however, altered the trajectory of what had the potential to become a breakthrough campaign.<\/p>\n The NFL rarely waits forever for progress. Steichen enters 2026 with the benefit of organizational familiarity and a track record that still earns respect around the league. At the same time, expectations are increasing. The Colts need to demonstrate that they are moving closer to becoming a consistent playoff team rather than remaining stuck in the middle of the AFC pack.<\/p>\n Fortunately for Steichen, he has faced challenges before. His rise from Eagles coordinator to NFL head coach was built on adaptability, offensive creativity, and player development. Those same qualities will likely determine whether he remains in Indianapolis for years to come.
