The past 12 months have been full of new experiences, change, and a gold medal at the World Junior Championships for Vancouver Canucks prospect Wilson Bj\u00f6rck. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
After being selected by the Canucks in the fifth round of the 2025 draft, Bj\u00f6rck left the Swedish junior circuit for the NCAA in search of higher competition. That same year, he also won a World Juniors gold medal representing Sweden.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s been going fast,\u201d said Bj\u00f6rck about his past 12 months. \u201cFirst, getting drafted, and then from the draft, going to Colorado, and all that. I had good people around me, so\u00a0it’s\u00a0been easy to adjust, and\u00a0it’s\u00a0been easy to get comfortable in Colorado.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cMy teammates, coaches and Mikael Samuelsson and Mike Komisarek have made the transition comfortable for me,\u201d he added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The highlight of\u00a0Bj\u00f6rck\u2019s\u00a0year was the World Juniors, a victory whose significance for Sweden became increasingly clear to him afterwards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThinking back about it, at\u00a0first,\u00a0I\u00a0didn’t\u00a0realize how big it was, and then a week went past, and a month went past, and it was like, damn, I\u00a0actually went\u00a0through that.\u00a0It’s\u00a0cool to have that experience, and\u00a0it’s\u00a0always\u00a0cool\u00a0to\u00a0represent\u00a0your country,\u201d said Bj\u00f6rck.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Adding another memorable moment to his World Juniors experience, Bj\u00f6rck was able to share the gold medal win with his brother, Viggo, who is\u00a0anticipated\u00a0to be an early pick in this summer\u2019s NHL Entry Draft.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Wilson will travel to Buffalo to join his brother and family, looking forward to time together after being in Colorado most of the year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In his first NCAA season, Bj\u00f6rck put up five goals and 10 assists in 31 games.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0certainly not\u00a0eye-popping\u00a0numbers, but he believes his game grew a lot by taking on the challenge of moving on from the Swedish junior league and jumping into NCAA competition.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe biggest jump from junior to college hockey is that you\u00a0have to\u00a0play with more maturity, and you\u00a0have to\u00a0play in\u00a0a different style.\u00a0You\u2019ve\u00a0got to listen to your coach, know what he wants, how he wants me to play.\u00a0I’ve\u00a0gotten more mature, not just with the puck, but\u00a0also\u00a0I\u00a0think more in the d-zone,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cEven though I\u00a0didn’t\u00a0produce as much as the previous year [in Sweden\u2019s J20 league],\u00a0I still felt that I\u00a0was comfortable carrying the puck and creating offence.\u00a0It’s\u00a0always hard when\u00a0you’re\u00a0so close to scoring, and\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0hitting the post in\u00a0almost every\u00a0game. I hope I can do this more this season\u00a0that’s\u00a0coming up. But it was my first year, and I\u00a0can’t\u00a0be too hard on myself with the production.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In addition to improving his game, Bj\u00f6rck has been working hard to build his body. Colorado College has a great off-ice program for the players, which has helped Bj\u00f6rck add\u00a0nearly 15\u00a0pounds, but he has done it in a much\u00a0different way\u00a0than most of us did when we were\u00a0freshmen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Canucks development\u00a0coaches\u00a0Mikael Samuelsson and Mike Komisarek surprised Bj\u00f6rck a bit this past season. It was the first time Bj\u00f6rck had this kind of support, and it really helped the young Swede.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn’t really expect them to help me as much as they did,\u201d said Bj\u00f6rck.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI never really had someone who sat down with me and said, \u2018Okay, how about you focus on this thing?\u2019 Or \u2018What if you tried to do this instead of that?\u2019\u00a0That was really interesting, just to see how they work with us players.\u00a0It was important too, because sometimes when\u00a0I felt that this game\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0going my way, they were there supporting me.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Bj\u00f6rck is back in Colorado following a quick trip home to Sweden,\u00a0working\u00a0out\u00a0and getting ahead of his classes for the fall. He will be up in Buffalo to watch\u00a0Viggo\u00a0get drafted and is excited to go straight from Buffalo to Vancouver to take part in Canucks\u2019 development camp.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
It was an incredible 12 months for Bj\u00f6rck, and he is looking forward to taking a jump in his second NCAA season.
