Lauren Jackson has revealed when the WNBL should be played to regain its status as a powerhouse<\/p>\n
The WNBL <\/a>won\u2019t change the season to winter in the foreseeable future \u2013 with the legendary Lauren Jackson <\/a>adamant summer is where the league can \u201cexplode\u201d to regain its mantle as Australia\u2019s premier women\u2019s sporting competition, writes Matt Logue from CODE\u00a0Sports.<\/p>\n The prospect of moving the WNBL season <\/a>to the middle of the year in a bid to attract more overseas imports has been discussed among officials. Jackson says \u201coptions are on the table for the future\u201d in regards to potentially changing the season from its current date of October to March. <\/p>\n However, for now, she believes the league has found its home in the warmer months and it\u2019s paramount the WNBL has the chance to lure home Australia\u2019s 12 WNBA stars during their off-season. <\/p>\n \u201cOur season is a summer season and we are growing and building it,\u201d Jackson said in Sydney on Friday \u2013 where Optus was announced as a new major partner for the NBL and WNBL.<\/p>\n \u201cThat is part of our identity, we have a great product and where the season sits in the annual calendar right now is perfect. <\/p>\n \u201cA lot of our great athletes are WNBA players and right now we don\u2019t want to lose the ability to have those Australian players here (in the WNBL). <\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve got a premium product \u2013 it is perfect where it is and we want to continue to grow it and build it.\u201d<\/p>\n The WNBL is coming off its first season under the Larry Kestelman and Robyn Denholm ownership structure<\/a>. The competition experienced unprecedented growth, with record-breaking viewership and stadium attendance. <\/p>\n Nearly 200,000 fans attended games, marking a 43 per cent year-on-year increase. Jackson \u2013 who is the WNBL\u2019s Chief Strategy and Basketball Partnerships Officer \u2013 says the competition is just getting started.<\/p>\n
