ABC News <\/a>the season had gotten off to an unusually poor start, with warm overnight temperatures crippling snow-making efforts across both Victoria and NSW.<\/p>\n\u201cIt\u2019s been unseasonably warm over the last month, really,\u201d Mr Taylor said.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, the resorts haven\u2019t been able to make much snow, which is what they rely on in June primarily.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo it\u2019s been a very slow start to the season.\u201d<\/p>\n
Data from Snowatch shows natural snow depths across almost all Australian ski resorts are currently sitting at zero, with Mt Buller the only resort reporting any measurable cover thanks to artificial snow production.<\/p>\n
Temperatures across the alpine regions have remained above freezing, with no significant snowfall recorded in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
The short-term outlook also remains bleak.<\/p>\n
Forecasts predict less than 6cm of snowfall across all Australian resorts over the next five to 10 days, though Victoria could receive slightly better falls later in the month.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe do have some snow coming probably later on Sunday and early next week, but it\u2019s only light,\u201d Mr Taylor said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo it\u2019s not really going to get enough lifts running at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
The forecaster warned Australians may need to wait until July before decent skiing conditions arrive.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re probably going to have to wait until maybe later in the first week of July until we get something a bit more substantial,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The disappointing start comes despite Aussies already forking out thousands for lift passes and accommodation.<\/p>\n
At Mt Buller, adult day lift tickets currently range from $121 to $209, while a full season pass costs $1649.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Thredbo adult day passes can cost up to $259, while Perisher\u2019s Epic Australia Pass costs $1435 for unlimited access.<\/p>\n
The 2026 Australian snow season officially began on June 6.<\/p>\n
While the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a warmer-than-average winter across much of the country, Mr Taylor said snow lovers shouldn\u2019t give up hope entirely.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe only really need one or two decent systems coming through where we get a nice dump that can really get things going,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat usually happens from about the second and third week in July and things really pick up in August.\u201d<\/p>\n
Spokesperson for Mt Buller ski resort David Clark told news.com.au \u201cBourke St Express chairlift and the new covered magic carpet are open for limited beginner skiing and lessons, backed by our investment in all-weather snowmaking\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cSeeing the smiles on kids\u2019 faces as they take their first turns is exactly why we put in the work, and while it\u2019s still very early, we\u2019re excited for the season ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
