In fact, when you drive into town, you know what they have right in the middle \u2013 a giant cane toad. It\u2019s a working-class community where everyone knows everyone, and because of that, there is nowhere to hide your true character. <\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a bit of a dick, it catches up with you fast. You can\u2019t outrun your reputation in a place like that, so the best way to live is simply not to be one. <\/p>\n

Kids there are raised on basic respect. When you meet a young fella from the district, he looks you in the eye and gives you a firm handshake. It\u2019s a trait that is becoming harder to find these days.<\/p>\n

To understand the weight on a young player\u2019s shoulders when they put on a Sarina Crocs jersey, you only have to look at the history books. For a town of barely 5,600 people, Sarina has produced an almost unbelievable assembly line of State of Origin talent. <\/p>\n

Before Reuben Cotter ever laced up a boot, legends like Dale Shearer, Martin Bella, Wendell Sailor, and Kevin Campion had already paved the way. When you add Daly Cherry-Evans, who spent critical teenage years in the Crocs system, and the women\u2019s Origin pioneer Brianna Clark to the mix, this tiny dot on the North Queensland map has contributed 98 games to the Maroon jersey. <\/p>\n

Statistically, it works out to roughly one State of Origin appearance for every 57 people living in the town.<\/p>\n

Reuben is exactly what that upbringing looks like. <\/p>\n

When he was trying to make his way into the NRL, his body let him down. He tore his ACL three times in a row and missed three straight years of football without playing a single minute of regular game time. <\/p>\n

In a big city system, a kid going through that might get lost or give up. But Reuben just stayed quiet, did the work, and kept showing up.<\/p>\n

When he finally got back on the field and was allocated to the Mackay Cutters in the Q-Cup, the Cowboys hierarchy were adamant he had to play hooker. <\/p>\n

They wanted him passing and playing a specific, structured role. But at the Cutters, the local captain, Jayden Hodges, was already the established dummy-half who had trained with the team all week and knew the patterns. <\/p>\n

Reuben being Reuben made sure he shared the time with Hodges. He did what his NRL club needed and got in his reps but put his ego aside and did the right thing by his hometown team at the same time. <\/p>\n

If Jayden was at nine, Reuben ran. Sure, he had the hooker\u2019s jersey on, but he just went out and ripped in wherever he was needed. <\/p>\n

Down the track sometime later, Billy Slater noted that you can put him at prop, lock, or hooker and he just does a job because he works hard, treats people with respect, and loves playing footy.<\/p>\n

Funnily enough, a few years later, the NRL ended up moving him into the middle unit for good anyway. <\/p>\n

When Slater picked him to debut for Queensland, the rugby league world finally saw the engine that the Q-Cup had been trying to contain. <\/p>\n

On debut in Sydney, Cotter didn\u2019t look like a rookie; he played like a veteran machine, churning out an incredible 80-minute performance with 49 tackles and over 120 running metres. His ability to go the distance in the toughest environment in the world completely blew people away.<\/p>\n

By the following season, he became the undisputed king of the interstate series. Playing three consecutive 80-minute epics at prop and lock, he took home the Wally Lewis Medal for Player of the Series, topping the Maroons\u2019 defensive charts by averaging roughly 40 tackles a match. <\/p>\n

His teammate, Valentine Holmes, echoed just how much players love having him in the trenches, calling him the guy who just goes out there, cleans up everyone\u2019s messes, and keeps sprinting to make a tackle even in the 79th minute.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s funny how in the NRL everyone is looking for the athletic beast \u2014 the super players. The bigger the better, faster than a speeding bullet. But, in the biggest of arenas, Origin, the players that really stand the test are the tough ones, and it\u2019s hard to work out why. Maybe it has something to do with character. The trash talk just does not seem to work here.<\/p>\n

For Reuben, all the massive stats, the player of the series medals, and the Kangaroo jerseys haven\u2019t altered his perspective for a second. <\/p>\n

When asked about his rise from the casualty ward to the top of the international stage, he keeps it straightforward, saying he just tries to tackle hard, run hard, and not stop moving for the boys next to him. He talks about how where he comes from, you don\u2019t read too much into the noise, you just show up and put the work in. <\/p>\n

Country kids that make Origin are never just playing for themselves, they are playing for their families, but also their hometowns.<\/p>\n

The next Reuben Cotter is most likely helping his family with the farm right up until the game goes to air on Wednesday night, just getting in front of the TV right before kick-off. He\u2019ll sit down just in time for the pre-game player profiles, where each player looks straight into the camera, crosses their arms, and calls out their junior club. <\/p>\n
