{"id":741907,"date":"2026-06-17T07:57:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T07:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/741907\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T07:57:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T07:57:12","slug":"pauline-hanson-says-australia-must-be-monocultural-in-national-press-club-speech-pauline-hanson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/741907\/","title":{"rendered":"Pauline Hanson says Australia \u2018must be monocultural\u2019 in National Press Club speech | Pauline Hanson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pauline Hanson has declared Australia cannot be multicultural and must exist as a \u201cmonocultural society\u201d, warning high migration had caused the country to lose its identity and national values.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In an inflammatory address to the National Press Club in Canberra, the One Nation leader pledged to axe SBS and overhaul the ABC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/jun\/17\/one-nation-health-policies-errors-pauline-hanson-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">if she wins the next federal election<\/a>, including imposing a licence fee for metropolitan households to watch the public broadcaster. Regional services would be protected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In her first ever address to the club after 30 years in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/australian-politics\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian politics<\/a>, Hanson said western values were under siege, and governments were too \u201cfrightened\u201d to crack down on Islamic extremism, including hate preachers in Sydney mosques.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe turn a blind eye,\u201d she said. \u201cWhy? Because we are frightened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Calling for a slashing of migration to help address the housing crisis, the Queensland senator sought to claim the mantle of a mainstream national leader, better in touch with voters\u2019 concerns than Labor and the Coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe cannot be a multicultural society,\u201d she told the packed club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are a multiracial society, but we must be monocultural. Australians must live under the one cultural umbrella.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hanson also made a broadside attack on transgender rights, pledging to sack Australia\u2019s sex discrimination commissioner and claiming \u201calmost every instrument of government [is] dedicated to a transgender ideology which seeks to redefine humanity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The 51-minute speech was interrupted by a banner appearing behind the podium which noted Hanson\u2019s opposition to minimum wage increases for low-paid workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The banner said: \u201cI opposed a pay rise for workers while I took a $100,000 pay rise for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Staff moved quickly to tear down the banner and Hanson later insisted small business owners were being driven to the wall by tough industrial relations rules.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hanson promised to address the cost-of-living crisis and pledged to increase spending to address homelessness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked about abortion policy, Hanson said too many pregnancies were terminated in Australia, calling for the procedure to be banned after 20 weeks. Exemptions would be in place to protect the health of the mother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After raising a claimed $4m in donations targeting the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/commentisfree\/2026\/jun\/12\/one-nation-fire-the-liar-donations-fundraising-news-corp-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for being a \u201cliar\u201d<\/a>, Hanson said the Labor leader had \u201clied to become elected\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe public are sick to the back teeth with these lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She attacked a Guardian Australia reporter for asking about her daughter, Lee Hanson, who is employed as a senior adviser to New South Wales One Nation senator Sean Bell, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/26\/pauline-hansons-daughter-employed-in-taxpayer-funded-job-with-nsw-one-nation-senator\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">despite living and working in Tasmania<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pauline Hanson responds to Guardian journalist\u2019s press club question with personal attack \u2013 video\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5023.jpg\" height=\"259\" width=\"460\" class=\"dcr-1qi2at0\"\/>Pauline Hanson responds to Guardian journalist\u2019s press club question with personal attack \u2013 video<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lee Hanson is expected to run for the Senate at the next election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI didn\u2019t get her that job. She got the job on her own merits by someone who actually wanted to employ her,\u201d Hanson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hanson told the Guardian journalist Sarah Martin, who asked the question, that she would be banned from any future press conferences and refused any interview requests. She also accused Martin of having an \u201cobsession\u201d with her, her party and Gina Rinehart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHonestly you never give up,\u201d Hanson said. \u201cYou will put out lies about me, well, I\u2019ve had enough of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hitting out at support for the renewables transition from the federal government and business leaders including Andrew Forrest, Hanson said environmental rules and efforts to cut carbon emissions should not be allowed to \u201cthrottle\u201d the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe will never be able to do without coal and gas,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe should encourage the investment in them and provide power to homes and business, as we once did, at the world\u2019s cheapest price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Attacking Labor for changes to the 50% capital gains tax discount and negative gearing, announced in last month\u2019s federal budget, Hanson said the reforms would punish ambitious and aspirational young people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She labelled the treasurer Jim Chalmers\u2019 defence of the plans \u201cpathetic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe difference between Albanese, Chalmers and me is that I actually ran a small business. They have earned their income by working for government, taking their salary from the taxpayer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hanson\u2019s speech came as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/may\/27\/guardian-essential-poll-labors-housing-and-tax-changes-fail-to-win-over-voters-as-support-for-one-nation-swells\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One Nation pulled ahead of the major parties in opinion polls<\/a>, and as she outpaced Albanese as the preferred prime minister in Newspoll this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hanson has flirted with a move back to the lower house at the 2028 poll, and the party has begun allocating portfolios for opposition or government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She lashed the federal public service for being incompetent and promised a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/one-nation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One Nation<\/a> government would direct bureaucrats on how to implement policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hanson accused the media of being complicit in silencing average voters and shutting down debate.
