{"id":741913,"date":"2026-06-17T08:00:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T08:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/741913\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T08:00:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T08:00:17","slug":"shane-van-gisbergen-likens-san-diego-nascar-track-to-supercars-homebush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/741913\/","title":{"rendered":"Shane van Gisbergen likens San Diego NASCAR track to Supercars Homebush"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASCAR will take a step into the unknown this weekend with its inaugural Coronado Street Course race in San Diego, but the challenge ahead is not totally foreign to Shane van Gisbergen.<\/p>\n<p>The nature of the layout means all eyes are on SVG to come to the fore after a tricky last two weekends in Michigan and at Pocono Raceway.<\/p>\n<p>The Kiwi, of course, famously won on NASCAR debut in Chicago and ended up with a remarkable 80 percent strike rate (i.e. four wins from five starts) across the Cup and Xfinity Series on the Illinois streets.<\/p>\n<p>San Diego has effectively taken Chicago\u2019s place as the new annual street course on the schedule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to the track last week to do some promotional things, Turns 1 and 2, and the first half of the track was laid out, but around the airfield, there was still choppers there,\u201d said the #97 Trackhouse Racing driver.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Double the wiiings for San Diego<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ConnorZilisch?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">@ConnorZilisch<\/a> \ud83e\udd1d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/shanevg97?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">@shanevg97<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/h5PdSETZ8m\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/h5PdSETZ8m<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Trackhouse Racing (@TeamTrackhouse) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TeamTrackhouse\/status\/2067026940255748584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">June 16, 2026<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I only saw a little bit of the layout, but it was really cool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a really rough and technical course, a lot of unknowns. Thursday will be an important day, when we get on-site and can have a look around the track, get a feel for everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe surface changes stood out to me the most. Some of it\u2019s really nice, there is new tarmac there in Turn 2, and a couple of other places. Then, it\u2019s really rough like Sebring, kind of with the big cracks and old asphalt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a real challenge to have a car that works all kind of surfaces and transitions to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All up, it reminds him of a former Supercars circuit \u2013 specifically Homebush, which hosted a Sydney street race from 2009 to 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Van Gisbergen tasted victory on four occasions there from 18 starts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/superstore.v8sleuth.com.au\/products\/the-finish-line-garth-tander-autobiography-book?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=buy-button&amp;utm_content=buy-button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/tander-finish-line_1024x1024.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be very bumpy\u2026 you\u2019ve got to have good suspension set-up, soft and compliant. It kind of reminds me of Homebush in some ways,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a street track I did around the Olympic Park there in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe straightaways into little tricky sections and corners, nothing really flows, it\u2019s all one to the other. Then we will put a corner here and here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s odd but that makes it a really good challenge.
