DECLAN Fraser\u2019s return to the full-time Repco Supercars Championship grid was one of the happy stories of the past summer.<\/p>\n

After all, it has been a rollercoaster ride for the man who has his beloved #777 tattooed on himself.<\/p>\n

Having clinched the 2022 Super2 crown, Fraser was a late addition to the main game field for the following season at Jake Kostecki\u2019s expense, commandeering the fourth Tickford Racing Mustang.<\/p>\n

As big a win as that was, that dream opportunity gradually turned into a nightmare, with Ford suffering severely in the early stages of Gen3 and it becoming clear by mid-season that Tickford was mulling a major downsizing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sure enough that transpired, leaving Fraser to be squeezed out.<\/p>\n

As if that wasn\u2019t bad enough, the Gold Coast home in which Fraser was residing burnt to the ground<\/a> while he was away on Brad Jones Racing co-driving duties at the 2024 Bathurst 1000.<\/p>\n

There was also a sudden split mid-last year with GT World Challenge Australia squad Volante Rosso.<\/p>\n

To say the least, the now 25-year-old hasn\u2019t had it easy.<\/p>\n

Which made it all the more heartwarming when Fraser was plucked from the wilderness for a 2026 PremiAir Racing primary seat \u2013 and he has consistently vowed to repay Peter Xiberras\u2019 faith ever since<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to this weekend\u2019s Darwin Triple Crown, Fraser holds 18th in the standings. That is no disaster, but the pressure is mounting to keep pace with rookie teammate Jayden Ojeda<\/a>\u2019s upward trajectory.<\/p>\n

OPINION: The course of action PremiAir must take now<\/a><\/p>\n

Fraser\u2019s ability to race through the field has always been a strength; qualifying however has been a bit more of a question mark.<\/p>\n

And the simple truth is that Supercars, like many variations of motorsport, is a formula that places a premium on starting position.<\/p>\n

Supercars champion Will Brown<\/a> said it best just recently, amid his ongoing search to rediscover top form.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be honest, this year is nearly all about the qualifying,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so hard to pass because everyone is doing such a good job out there (and) most people have their car set-ups very similar.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Ojeda starred to book third on the Sunday grid at Symmons Plains, Fraser has just thrice avoided a bottom-six qualifying result all season long. In Tasmania, he had to start the trio of races from 23rd, 23rd and 22nd.<\/p>\n

Now, this is not to write Fraser off. Far from it. There\u2019s still time to flip the script, plus \u2018Decca\u2019 is super tough and ultra-hungry \u2013 he\u2019s had to be even just to get back to this level after the series of setbacks he has been dealt.<\/p>\n

Qualifying towards the back won\u2019t cut it for long, though.<\/p>\n

Roland Dane is known to be a fan of Fraser\u2019s. I have little doubt PremiAir\u2019s ideal scenario would be to press on with its current combination into 2027. It has got itself two talented drivers who can grow in parallel with the team\u2019s rebuild, both of whom appear to be excellent cultural fits.<\/p>\n

But in a narrow silly season market where seats and free agents could be sparse (especially if Matt Payne<\/a> stays put) it may pay to get on the front foot.<\/p>\n

Typically speaking, the annual silly season rumour mill starts to spark up around Darwin\/June. By Townsville\/July, it\u2019s well and truly in overdrive.<\/p>\n

Fraser must sooner than later show PremiAir that it needn\u2019t look any further.<\/p>\n

Conveniently, Hidden Valley was the site of his best grid slot during the 2023 season.<\/p>\n

Bettering the 13th he qualified for the Sunday Sydney race back in February would go a fair way towards setting Fraser up for a positive Darwin weekend, and indeed proving himself deserving of an all-important extension of his Supercars renaissance.<\/p>\n
