\n\tAvengers: Doomsday<\/a> is pretty darn great \u2014 if Joe Russo<\/a> does say so himself. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn a new interview with CBR<\/a>, Russo \u2014 who directed the film alongside his brother, Anthony Russo \u2014 says the new film is more emotionally complex and mature than the previous entries, which included two of the highest-grossing films of all time (Infinity War and Endgame).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere are a lot of surprises in this,\u201d Russo said. \u201cAnd I think [Doomsday\u00a0is] the most emotionally complex of all of them. And in a lot of ways, the most mature of all of them.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tRusso added that the film, along with its sequel Secret Wars, has been tougher to pull off than the previous entries. \u201cThe stakes keep going up. But emotional complexity is always the answer. You bring emotional complexity to anything, and it enriches it. It makes it a fuller experience for the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition, star Robert Downey Jr., who plays the antagonist Doctor Doom in the film, teased that the film\u2019s writers (Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron, along with Marvel boss Kevin Feige overseeing the project) may have cracked Marvel\u2019s post-Endgame slump. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s something going on in Doomsday, and forward that is literally the only antidote to, \u2018How do you not have these films be let down after an Infinity War and an Endgame?’\u201d the actor said. \u201cAnd boy, have we labored long and hard to bring that down \u2026 It\u2019s about the way it\u2019s been structured, and the other characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Russo brothers were recently at SXSW London, where they also talked about the upcoming Disney release.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\tJoe Russo said that they\u2019re \u201cback to phase zero\u201d of the MCU with\u00a0Doomsday\u00a0and Robert Downey Jr. playing antagonist Dr. Doom: \u201cThat serial shifting and changing and surprising you and then reinventing itself and then shifting and changing and then surprising you \u2014\u00a0that\u2019s exciting and I think you\u2019re going to see some shifting and changing [with\u00a0Doomsday]. So, get ready for it. Look, we were with Rob [Downey Jr.] earlier today. We were both talking about this concept that we are back to phase zero. This is starting over from scratch. We want to make sure everybody feels like this isn\u2019t leaning on anything from the past.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnthony Russo also praised the success of Backrooms and Obsession (the latter\u2019s director, Curry Barker, is The Hollywood Reporter\u2018s cover story interview this week<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m fascinated by\u00a0Obsession,\u201d he said. \u201c[It\u2019s] viciously funny, right? In a very dark way, made for less than a million dollars, and will be the highest return ever for a movie. That\u2019s an explosively disruptive moment \u2026 [The state of the film business] is in a very, very complicated place, but I think that\u2019s a good thing. I think it\u2019s a good thing, because Gen Z are aging into becoming not only the dominant audience, but the dominant storytellers today.\u201d <\/p>\n
