The first two movies take place in a cabin in the woods, which is a timeless concept, as does the 2013 Evil Dead. Army of Darkness may have teleported Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams back to medieval times, but 2023’s Evil Dead Rise and the upcoming Evil Dead Burn take place in contemporary settings. Even with modern amenities, though, this didn’t do much to help any of the characters when the Necronomicon unleashed evil forces.

A new spin-off in the series, Evil Dead Wrath, entered production earlier this year, though many details about that project remain under wraps. However, producer Rob Tapert gave a presentation earlier this year at Michigan State University where he revealed unexpected details about the spin-off.

Over on YouTube, user ziggy2019 was in attendance at the event, in which Tapert confirmed the timeline of Evil Dead Wrath. The filmmaker revealed:

“Evil Dead Wrath is yet another great departure. It predates everything, takes place in 1972. It will feel like a 1972 movie, because the director and his DP want to imitate the film look and feel of something that’s called Ektachrome 100, which was a film stock still available, but a film stock a lot of movies shot on back then. And so it’s very warm, very tungsten.

“That one, unlike Burn, has a lot of coming-of-age sexual hijinks in it, which the Evil Dead universe is not really known for, but this one does. And it goes there. I think it’s going to be the one since the first Evil Dead movie that may have the most difficulty with the MPAA.”

These remarks confirm that this new spin-off will technically be the first prequel in the franchise. While Army of Darkness had significant flashbacks chronologically, it continued Ash’s adventures, so it wasn’t technically a prequel. Whether or not the new movie could inform audiences of the Necronomicon’s journey to where we found it in the original movie isn’t yet known.

In addition to insight into Evil Dead Wrath, he also gave extra info on Evil Dead Burn. The filmmaker explained:

“It’s the story of a French woman in a bad marriage in America and with – what we will discover along the ride – was probably an abusive husband whose family did not believe her. And so they were basically the in-laws from hell. On a more technical level, it sits on the edge of the Evil Dead universe, I’ll say that. Because [director] Sébastien [Vaniček] felt that he was given the green light by Sam [Raimi] and myself to make something totally different in the Evil Dead universe, which he did. It looks and feels different.

“He’s a very strong filmmaker. It probably has the least amount of blood, but the most amount of brutality, and – I would call it Serbian energy, by any other name – that comes through. So it’s really, really strong. There’s really great performances in it. It is not tongue-in-cheek. There are some solid laughs, though. There’s some good laughs in it, but it has no vestiges of the tone of Evil Dead 2 or even, I would say, Evil Dead Rise, which still had a little bit of the Irish wink and nod from that director.”

It’s arguably never been a better time to be a fan of Evil Dead, especially given how much the series has stagnated at various times in its history. The biggest break came in the 20 years between Army of Darkness and 2013’s Evil Dead, and while that reboot narrative failed to earn a follow-up, we got three seasons of Ash vs. Evil Dead. Evil Dead Rise was a project initially filmed for a streaming release, only to get enough support to head to theaters.

Even though Evil Dead Rise took things out of a cabin in the woods, it helped prove that the success of the series isn’t based on characters or an environment, and is instead about the chaos and carnage that Deadites cause.

[27
64,63,134,344
post-743852","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-movies","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-entertainment","tag-movies
["GET
