{"id":74421,"date":"2025-08-17T06:12:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T06:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/74421\/"},"modified":"2025-08-17T06:12:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T06:12:06","slug":"channel-5-revives-bbcs-play-for-today-to-help-shape-future-of-british-drama-channel-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/74421\/","title":{"rendered":"Channel 5 revives BBC\u2019s Play for Today to \u2018help shape future of British drama\u2019 | Channel 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It was one of the most influential British television series of the last century, renowned for exploring thorny societal issues and bringing the work of emerging talent, such as Ray Winstone, Alison Steadman, Helen Mirren and Dennis Potter, to mass audiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2020\/oct\/12\/drama-out-of-a-crisis-a-celebration-of-play-for-today-review-when-the-play-really-was-the-thing\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Play for Today<\/a> is being revived on Channel 5, to give young writers, actors and producers from lower-income backgrounds a way into TV, helped by established talent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Continuing the series\u2019 history of politically charged social realism, the first four productions cover a failing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/mar\/17\/adolescence-netflix-powerful-tv-could-save-lives\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adolescence<\/a>-style school in special measures, celebrity and historical abuse, ageing and money, and feature appearances from stars including Anita Dobson, Nigel Havers, Sue Johnston and Alan Davies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/channelfive\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Channel 5<\/a> commissioning editor Paul Testar said Play for Today was \u201csynonymous with high-quality standalone television dramas\u201d. Its revival would help \u201cshape the future of British drama\u201d, he added, providing an \u201copportunity to support emerging talent behind the scenes \u2013 from writers and directors to production teams \u2013 especially those from lower-income backgrounds who haven\u2019t always had clear pathways into the industry\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Play for Today was a BBC One anthology drama series that ran from 1970 until 1984, designed \u201cto rattle the cages of the establishment\u201d and famed for bringing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2009\/sep\/27\/abigails-party-mike-leigh-steadman\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Abigail\u2019s Party<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/gallery\/2009\/may\/04\/john-mortimer-tv-drama\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rumpole of the Bailey<\/a> to the small screen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It featured more than 300 productions, the most controversial of which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2025\/apr\/21\/ray-winstone-how-we-made-borstal-drama-scum-screws\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scum<\/a> \u2013 a prison drama starring Winstone that was considered so harrowing it was banned from broadcast and later remade as a film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The drama in which Dobson stars, Never Too Late, is about ageing, rebellion and independence. She told the Guardian it would resonate because \u201c[we] live in a society now where older people are living much longer, so it\u2019s really important, I think, that their voices are heard as much as young people\u2019s voices\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI hope it makes lots of people feel positive and hopeful that life is never over until the last bell rings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She praised Channel 5, for \u201cteaching people new skills\u201d, and the young crew she worked with on the show, some of whom were on their first production. \u201cThe joy they brought to work was just fantastic. They were willing; they were eager.
