{"id":74514,"date":"2025-08-17T07:12:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T07:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/74514\/"},"modified":"2025-08-17T07:12:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T07:12:11","slug":"landmark-plastics-treaty-falls-apart-as-nations-fail-to-find-consensus-for-pollutioneaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/74514\/","title":{"rendered":"Landmark plastics treaty falls apart as nations fail to find consensus for pollutioneaty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Talks aimed at striking a landmark global treaty on plastic pollution have ended without agreement as countries failed to find consensus on how the world should tackle the ever-growing scourge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Negotiators from 185 nations worked beyond Thursday&#8217;s deadline and through the night in an ultimately futile search for common ground between nations wanting bold action, such as curbing plastic production, and oil-producing states preferring to focus more narrowly on waste management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Several countries voiced bitter disappointment as the talks unravelled, but said they were prepared for future negotiations \u2014 despite six rounds of talks over three years now having failed to find agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We have missed a historic opportunity but we have to keep going and act urgently. (Reuters: Tuvalu Ministry of Justice Communication and Foreign Affairs\/File)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tuvalu, speaking for 14 Pacific small island developing states, said they were once again leaving empty-handed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For our islands, this means that without global cooperation and state action, millions of tonnes of plastic waste will continue to be dumped in our oceans, affecting our ecosystem, food security, livelihood and culture,&#8221; the Polynesian archipelago said.<\/p>\n<p>Oil-producing states fight &#8216;slippery slope&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The High Ambition Coalition, which includes Australia, the European Union, Britain and many African and Latin American countries, wanted to see language on reducing plastic production and the phasing out of toxic chemicals used in plastics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A cluster of mostly oil-producing states calling themselves the Like-Minded Group \u2014 including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Russia, Iran, and Malaysia \u2014 want the treaty to have a much narrower remit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-15\/birds-crunch-full-plastic-losing-war-waste\/105221266\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">On a pristine Australian island the birds are so full of plastic they crunch<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">It&#8217;s one of the most pristine places on the planet, but the birds have bellies so full of plastic that they crunch if you squeeze them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Our views were not reflected \u2026 without an agreed scope, this process cannot remain on the right track and risks sliding down a slippery slope,&#8221; said Kuwait.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Bahrain said it wanted a treaty that &#8220;does not penalise developing countries for exploiting their own resources&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">France&#8217;s Ecological Transition Minister Agn\u00e8s Pannier-Runacher said: &#8220;I am disappointed, and I am angry,&#8221; saying a handful of countries, &#8220;guided by short-term financial interests&#8221;, had blocked the adoption of an ambitious treaty.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oil-producing countries and their allies have chosen to look the other way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The future of the negotiations was not immediately clear.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A photo of protesters outside UN talks on curbing plastic pollution. (AP Photo: Ahn Young-joon)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some countries called for a seventh round of talks in future, with the EU saying the latest draft was a &#8220;good basis for a resumed session&#8221;, and South Africa insisting: &#8220;It cannot end here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The talks in Geneva \u2014 called after the collapse of the fifth and supposedly final round of talks in South Korea late last year \u2014 opened on August 5.<\/p>\n<p>Last-ditch scramble<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">With countries far apart, chair Luis Vayas Valdivieso produced a draft text on Wednesday based on the limited areas of convergence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But it was immediately shredded by all sides, plunging the talks into disarray, with the high ambition group finding it shorn of all impact, and the Like-Minded Group saying it crossed their red lines and lacked scope.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Vayas spent Thursday in a frantic round of negotiations with regional groups and produced a new version after midnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Lead negotiators then held a meeting behind closed doors to thrash out whether there was enough in the text to keep talking.
