The Opta supercomputer has given the United States a sizeable chance of victory ahead of this game, with Mauricio Pochettino\u2019s side winning 58.5% of pre-match simulations.<\/p>\n

USA have won each of their last seven matches in Seattle.<\/p>\n

Australia have won three of their last four games at the World Cup, having managed just two victories across their first 17 tournament matches.<\/p>\n

Two huge waves of momentum come together in the second round of group matches at the 2026 World Cup, as co-hosts USA<\/a> take on Australia<\/a> at the Seattle Stadium after both nations got their tournaments off to a winning start.<\/p>\n

Mauricio Pochettino\u2019s side were one of the standout teams on Matchday 1, sweeping Paraguay aside by a 4\u20131 scoreline in Los Angeles with strikes from Folarin Balogun<\/a> and Giovanni Reyna<\/a>, after Dami\u00e1n Bobadilla\u2019s early own-goal.<\/p>\n

Balogun\u2019s brace on his World Cup debut saw him become just the second USA men\u2019s player to score multiple goals in a single match in the competition, after Bert Patenaude netted a hat-trick \u2013 also against Paraguay \u2013 in 1930.<\/p>\n

Skipper Tim Ream<\/a> became the oldest player to represent USA in a men\u2019s World Cup at 38 years and 250 days, and the centre-back completed 23 line-breaking passes, the most by a defender at the tournament since Ghana\u2019s John Paintsil (against USA) in 2010.<\/p>\n

That dominant 4\u20131 win in California was the USA\u2019s joint-biggest margin of victory at any men\u2019s World Cup, and the first time they\u2019ve scored four times in a match on football\u2019s biggest stage.<\/p>\n

However, the 2026 co-hosts haven\u2019t won consecutive World Cup matches since their first two games of the inaugural competition back in 1930, which included another three-goal victory over Paraguay.<\/p>\n

Pochettino\u2019s plans may have clicked into gear against Paraguay, but the USA face an Australia side who themselves put in a spirited display to beat T\u00fcrkiye 2\u20130 in their Group D opener.<\/p>\n

Nestory Irankunda<\/a>\u2019s breakaway goal saw him become Australia\u2019s youngest ever World Cup scorer, at 20 years and 125 days. The last player under the age of 21 to score in his first two World Cup appearances was Memphis Depay for the Netherlands in 2014.<\/p>\n

Irankunda\u2019s opener \u2013 and Connor Metcalfe<\/a>\u2019s long-range strike in the second half \u2013 exemplified the Socceroos\u2019 game-plan, with Australia ruthless on the counter-attack despite having just 28.3% possession, their lowest ever in a World Cup match.<\/p>\n

Tony Popovic\u2019s side faced 30 shots in the 2\u20130 win, with only West Germany in 1974 (31 in a 3\u20130 victory) managing more against Australia in a single World Cup match.<\/p>\n

Harry Souttar<\/a>\u2019s 14 clearances against T\u00fcrkiye was the third-most from any player at the 2026 World Cup, with only Peter Wilson (15 against East Germany in 1974) making more in a World Cup match for Australia.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Patrick Beach<\/a>\u2019s eight saves is the most by an Australia goalkeeper in a single game at the tournament, and the most made by any keeper on their World Cup debut since T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s R\u00fcst\u00fc Re\u00e7ber (nine against Brazil) in 2002.<\/p>\n

They have a chance to move three points clear at the top of Group D with a win, but the USA could be without talismanic winger Christian Pulisic<\/a> for this match, following a knock against Paraguay that saw him withdrawn at half-time.<\/p>\n

Having set up Balogun\u2019s opener, Pulisic now has a goal and three assists across his World Cup appearances, with only Landon Donovan contributing more (five) for the USA since 1966.<\/p>\n

Australia have a full bill of health coming into this match, and having scored in their last five World Cup games \u2013 their longest ever run in the competition \u2013\u00a0the Socceroos will back themselves to claim another significant scalp.<\/p>\n

USA vs Australia Head-to-Head<\/p>\n

The USA and Australia are meeting at the World Cup for the very first time, with all four of their previous encounters being friendlies, played in 1992, 1998, 2010 and 2025. <\/p>\n

Their most recent meetings have been won by USA: 3-1 in June 2010, before a 2-1 victory in October 2025, with 2026 World Cup squad members Haji Wright<\/a> and Cristian Roldan<\/a> combining for two goals and assists respectively. Left-back Jordan Bos<\/a> scored first for Australia.<\/p>\n

Australia\u2019s only previous match against a World Cup host came back in 1974, when they lost 3-0 to eventual winners West Germany in Hamburg.<\/p>\n

Despite both teams securing well-earned wins on Matchday 1, it\u2019s co-hosts USA who are seen as overwhelming favourites to claim another victory here, according to the Opta supercomputer.<\/p>\n

From 25,000 pre-match simulations, Pochettino\u2019s team came out on top in 58.5% of the outcomes, suggesting there is a growing weight of expectation behind this USA side.<\/p>\n

Australia\u2019s chances of victory stand at just 20.6% by comparison,\u00a0and with a draw given a 20.9% probability, the Socceroos will be keen to upset those pre-match presumptions.<\/p>\n
