Meet Lynette and Robert Federer, the couple behind the tennis icon (Imagre via Getty) Roger Federer’s outstanding career in tennis showcases his talent, yet it finds its deep roots in the upbringing provided by his parents, Lynette and Robert Federer. Born in Basel, Switzerland, on August 8, 1981, Roger grew up in a close-knit family that prized discipline, support, and hard work. His parents provide him with Swiss and South African nationality. Roger has often said how much their advise over the years, including in his 2024 Dartmouth College graduation speech when he said they always understood and supported him, helped him.

How Lynette Federer and Robert Federer Built Their Family Life

Lynette Federer was born in Germiston, South Africa, in 1952. As a young adult, she moved to Switzerland for work. That decision changed her life in more ways than one. While working at Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceuticals, she met Robert Federer, who grew up in Berneck in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen. The couple married in 1973 and later welcomed two children. Their daughter, Diana Federer, was born in 1979, followed by Roger in 1981. Diana also played tennis when she was young but later chose a career in nursing and continues to live in Switzerland.Despite coming from different backgrounds, Lynette and Robert built a strong family environment where their children were encouraged to follow their interests while staying grounded.

How Roger Federer’s Parents Helped Shape His Tennis Career

Roger’s connection with tennis started early. While their parents worked at Ciba-Geigy, Roger and Diana spent time playing on the company’s tennis courts. By the age of 3, Roger had already fallen in love with the sport.Recognising his talent, Lynette enrolled him at Basel’s Old Boys Tennis Club, where he began receiving more structured training. Robert also played an important role in teaching discipline.Speaking in a 2016 Nike video, Roger recalled one lesson from his father. He said, “I was playing with my dad and my attitude was always very temperamental and not the best at times, and my dad would get frustrated. So he put five Swiss francs on the bench next to me and said, ‘I’m leaving. I’ll see you at home.’ ”Years later, Roger reflected on those lessons during his Dartmouth speech, saying, “Relationships matter the most. I learned this way of thinking from the best: my parents, of course.”

Lynette Federer’s Foundation Work and the Family Today

Lynette remains closely involved in the Roger Federer Foundation, which Roger launched in 2003 to support education projects in Southern Africa and Switzerland. She serves on the foundation’s Board of Trustees and regularly travels between Switzerland and South Africa through her work.Robert and Lynette are also proud grandparents. Roger and his wife, Mirka Federer, have four children, twin daughters Myla and Charlene, and twin sons Leo and Lenny. Their daughter Diana also has twins, Emilie and Ramon, making the couple grandparents to six children.

Who are Roger Federer’s parents?
