Jalen Brunson’s Knicks ultimately won, ending a 53-year championship drought, and the discussion surrounding Wembanyama’s villain status continues.<\/p>\n

However, NBA analyst Sam Amick thinks Wembanyama is actively shedding his friendly, accommodating persona, which is laudable.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has no problem finding a highlight reel with and a low light reel with, you know, shoving Jalen’s face all the way down to the hardwood and and the elbow on Naz Reid in the previous rounds,\u201d Amick said<\/a>. \u201cLike he gets beat up the whole game. And then when he reacts, he’s obviously not afraid to react strongly. And when it comes to the villain, you know, label, that’s when I think a couple of things are in play.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLike you’re the guy who went against the beloved Knicks, even if you’re not a Knicks fan. This was a really popular kind of America’s team type of Knicks group. So now you’re the guy going against him. I honestly think it’s funny. You guys were breaking down the best American players. I think among a lot of the fans there is still kind of a mixed emotion thing about, \u2018do we want a French guy being the face of the franchise, the face of the league?\u2019 If he is going to be that guy, it’s almost like he’s auditioning right now and people are deciding what they think of them. I personally love it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wembanyama faced physical targeting throughout the 2025-26 season. Many think that instead of complaining about the physicality, he decided to dish it out himself, symbolized by the Brunson shove.<\/p>\n

Many aren’t able to take Wembanyama’s postseason activities positively, the NBA’s global faces like LeBron James or Steph Curry have largely relied on being universally beloved good guys. However, Wembanyama seems completely comfortable breaking that mold by prioritizing ruthlessness over marketability.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As for Wembanyama’s performance this past season, he didn’t just have a great third year; he led a young Spurs squad past the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder<\/a> in a brutal 7-game Western Conference Finals. The Spurs didn\u2019t secure the title against the Knicks, but his dominance and leadership can’t be ignored.<\/p>\n
