{"id":748518,"date":"2026-06-20T09:05:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T09:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/748518\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T09:05:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T09:05:11","slug":"40-years-since-death-of-university-of-maryland-basketball-legend-len-bias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/748518\/","title":{"rendered":"40 years since death of University of Maryland basketball legend Len Bias"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday, June 19, 2026, marks 40 years since the death of <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/topic\/University%20of%20Maryland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">University of Maryland<\/a> basketball legend <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/topic\/Len%20Bias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Len Bias<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bias died of a cocaine overdose in a residence hall on Maryland&#8217;s College Park campus in 1986. <\/p>\n<p>RELATED |<a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/sports\/basketball\/len-bias-selected-to-the-national-collegiate-basketball-hall-of-fame\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> Len Bias, former Terp, selected to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame<\/a><\/p>\n<p>His death came just two days after being taken second overall by the <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/topic\/Boston%20Celtics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Boston Celtics<\/a> in that year&#8217;s<a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/topic\/NBA%20Draft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> NBA Draft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bias was a two-time All-American and a two-time ACC Player of the Year during his time in College Park.
