Phillip Horton has been delving into the archives\u2026<\/p>\n<p>10. Riccardo Patrese (10 years, 5 months, 2 days)<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Riccardo Patrese held the record for the most Grands Prix starts for 15 years so it is little surprise that his wins have come over a long spell. However, he had a varied career, with the second and third of his six Grand Prix victories separated by a full seven seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Patrese\u2019s maiden win came for Brabham in Monaco, in 1982, when he triumphed in a race where several contenders (including Patrese himself!) hit strife in the closing laps. The Italian\u2019s last win came with <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoid2lsbGlhbXNfbGlua19jbGlja2VkIiwiY2xpY2tUZXh0Ijp0cnVlLCJwYXRoIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZm9ybXVsYTEuY29tL2VuL3RlYW1zL3dpbGxpYW1zIiwicGF0aFR5cGUiOiJpbnRlcm5hbCJ9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/teams\/williams\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Williams<\/a>, in Japan, a full decade later.<\/p>\n<p>9. Gerhard Berger (10 years, 9 months, 15 days)<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Gerhard Berger\u2019s inclusion on the list comes with another neat little side fact, in that his first and last victories were also the first and last victories for the Benetton team. The breakthrough came in Mexico City, in 1986, when he made a no-stop strategy work in an era when pit stops were not mandatory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">After winning stints with <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiZmVycmFyaV9saW5rX2NsaWNrZWQiLCJjbGlja1RleHQiOnRydWUsInBhdGgiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5mb3JtdWxhMS5jb20vZW4vdGVhbXMvZmVycmFyaSIsInBhdGhUeXBlIjoiaW50ZXJuYWwifQ==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/teams\/ferrari\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ferrari<\/a> and <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoibWNsYXJlbl9saW5rX2NsaWNrZWQiLCJjbGlja1RleHQiOnRydWUsInBhdGgiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5mb3JtdWxhMS5jb20vZW4vdGVhbXMvbWNsYXJlbiIsInBhdGhUeXBlIjoiaW50ZXJuYWwifQ==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/teams\/mclaren\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McLaren<\/a>, Berger returned to Benetton for 1996, and in 1997 missed three Grands Prix following ill health and the death of his father. But the Austrian put in one final hurrah in Germany, striding to victory from pole position.<\/p>\n<p>8. He retired after that season.<\/p>\n<p>7. Nelson Piquet (11 years, 2 months, 3 days)<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Nelson Piquet\u2019s first win came at Long Beach in 1980, with Brabham, from his maiden pole position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Having won three world titles further success eluded him after a move from Williams to Lotus, though a switch to Benetton brought three more wins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">The last of those was in Canada in 1991, when he famously inherited top spot after a last lap failure for former nemesis Nigel Mansell.<\/p>\n<p>5. Niki Lauda (11 years, 3 months, 28 days)<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\"><a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoibmlraV9sYXVkYV9saW5rX2NsaWNrZWQiLCJjbGlja1RleHQiOnRydWUsInBhdGgiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5mb3JtdWxhMS5jb20vZW4vaW5mb3JtYXRpb24vZHJpdmVycy1oYWxsLW9mLWZhbWUtbmlraS1sYXVkYS4yWWU3VllXZFh3aGI5N1pxTHl4dlgiLCJwYXRoVHlwZSI6ImludGVybmFsIn0=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/information\/drivers-hall-of-fame-niki-lauda.2Ye7VYWdXwhb97ZqLyxvX\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Niki Lauda<\/a>\u2019s first win came at Jarama in 1974, controlling proceedings to lead home Ferrari team mate Clay Regazzoni, and after three world titles, a near-fatal accident, and a break from Formula 1, the last arrived in 1985.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">That came in what turned out to be Lauda\u2019s swansong season with McLaren, and he swept to glory around the Dutch dunes at Zandvoort before hanging up his helmet for good at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>4. Alain Prost (12 years, 20 days)<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\"><a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiYWxhaW5fcHJvc3RfbGlua19jbGlja2VkIiwiY2xpY2tUZXh0Ijp0cnVlLCJwYXRoIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZm9ybXVsYTEuY29tL2VuL2xhdGVzdC90YWdzL2FsYWluLXByb3N0LjZudG5sYUF2TThNOVplbm5Hb0U1S1kiLCJwYXRoVHlwZSI6ImludGVybmFsIn0=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/tags\/alain-prost.6ntnlaAvM8M9ZennGoE5KY\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alain Prost<\/a>\u2019s maiden success came for Renault on home soil at the French Grand Prix at Dijon in 1981, when he was declared the winner of an interrupted race in an era when aggregate timing was used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">After prolific success with McLaren and Ferrari, Prost took a sabbatical in 1992 but returned for one final season at Williams, taking a fourth and final championship crown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">The last of 51 wins came in Germany, and he retired for good at the end of the season.<\/p>\n<p>3. Michael Schumacher (14 years, 1 month, 1 day)<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\"><a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoibWljaGFlbF9zY2h1bWFjaGVyX2xpbmtfY2xpY2tlZCIsImNsaWNrVGV4dCI6dHJ1ZSwicGF0aCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmZvcm11bGExLmNvbS9lbi9sYXRlc3QvdGFncy9taWNoYWVsLXNjaHVtYWNoZXIuMlFIQXJXU2o2d3V1OGtjNFFxZ0VhUyIsInBhdGhUeXBlIjoiaW50ZXJuYWwifQ==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/tags\/michael-schumacher.2QHArWSj6wuu8kc4QqgEaS\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Schumacher<\/a>\u2019s first win was achieved in Belgium, in 1992, a year after his Grand Prix debut at Spa-Francorchamps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Following success with Benetton the lion\u2019s share of his wins were achieved for Ferrari, the last of which came at the 16th round of 2006 in China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">He was competitive at the following two races, but an engine failure in Japan and tyre issues in Brazil denied him the perfect send-off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">A return with <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoibWVyY2VkZXNfbGlua19jbGlja2VkIiwiY2xpY2tUZXh0Ijp0cnVlLCJwYXRoIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZm9ybXVsYTEuY29tL2VuL3RlYW1zL21lcmNlZGVzIiwicGF0aFR5cGUiOiJpbnRlcm5hbCJ9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/teams\/mercedes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mercedes<\/a> for 2010-2012 had the occasional high point but he was unable to add to his 91 wins.<\/p>\n<p>2. Kimi Raikkonen (15 years, 6 months, 28 days)<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\"><a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoia2ltaV9yYWlra29uZW5fbGlua19jbGlja2VkIiwiY2xpY2tUZXh0Ijp0cnVlLCJwYXRoIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZm9ybXVsYTEuY29tL2VuL2xhdGVzdC90YWdzL2tpbWktcmFpa2tvbmVuLjJKVUw0eTJmRzhXV2NhQ1F1Q2E4NE8iLCJwYXRoVHlwZSI6ImludGVybmFsIn0=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/tags\/kimi-raikkonen.2JUL4y2fG8WWcaCQuCa84O\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kimi Raikkonen<\/a> won for the first time in Malaysia in 2003, and he was a front-runner for McLaren and Ferrari across the rest of the decade, claiming the title with the latter in 2007.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">After a two-year hiatus from F1 when he went rallying, Raikkonen returned with Lotus-Renault in 2012, and scored a couple more wins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">A return to Ferrari promised much but delivered little, and another win remained elusive, until he finally returned to the top step of the podium in Austin, in 2018, before he spent another three years with Sauber.<\/p>\n<p>1.
