AFL<\/a> great Tony Modra is awake with his family in hospital and is expected to \u201crecover well\u201d just 48 hours after a devastating cattle truck crash.<\/p>\n

Modra was taken to hospital in a critical condition on Thursday night<\/a> after a tree fell onto the vehicle he was driving, leaving the 57-year-old with serious injuries.<\/p>\n

The former Crows<\/a> star underwent facial surgery on Friday and reports from 9News Adelaide revealed that Modra is no longer critical. <\/p>\n

\u201cTony Modra is awake and has been with his wife and children this afternoon and the family thanked the public for the overwhelming support they\u2019ve received,\u201d Nine\u2019s Samantha Hogan said on Saturday. <\/p>\n

\u201cSA Health have confirmed he is now stable and no longer in a critical condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 57-year-old underwent extensive facial surgery last night and we\u2019ve been told there\u2019s promising signs that he\u2019s expected to recover well. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a remarkable turnaround, with many having grave fears for his survival after a tree fell into the path of a cattle truck he was driving.\u201d<\/p>\n

Modra\u2019s former side produced a stirring 79-62 win over the Melbourne Demons<\/a> as a tribute to the two-time All Australian.<\/p>\n

Former teammate Mark Ricciuto<\/a> heaped praise on the cult hero\u2019s toughness.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s showing the grit that we expected from Tony,\u201d he said on Fox Footy. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe had a really long day yesterday in surgery \u2026 fixed up his jaw and cheekbone and eye socket, trying to get it all back together.\u201d<\/p>\n
