{"id":749649,"date":"2026-06-20T22:38:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T22:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/749649\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T22:38:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T22:38:13","slug":"auckland-boy-traumatised-after-dog-attack-while-cycling-in-belmont","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/749649\/","title":{"rendered":"Auckland boy traumatised after dog attack while cycling in Belmont"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Auckland mother says her 10-year-old son is still traumatised more than a month after he was attacked by an out-of-control dog while riding his bike home in Belmont, on the North Shore.<\/p>\n<p>On May 13, Anna and her son Mickey were cycling along Lake Rd when they turned onto Bardia St, where a woman was struggling to control her dog.<\/p>\n<p>Anna, who did not want her last name used, was cycling a short distance behind her son and told the Herald she initially thought the dog had merely scared Mickey because the owner never told her he had been bitten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said, \u2018Oh, I hope your son is fine. I hope your son is not upset.\u2019 So I didn\u2019t know what happened,\u201d Anna said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I got home, I found my son shaking, crying, hiding himself in the corner and his left leg full of blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A neighbour who witnessed the attack later told Anna the dog had first tried to bite its owner before turning and attacking Mickey as he rode past.<\/p>\n<p>Mickey was rushed to hospital, where he underwent treatment and later received a tetanus shot as a precaution.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/H3QBBHYGONFJ7PT22CO4H4GEAM.JPG\" alt=\"Mickey has been fearful of dogs since the attack, often staying close to his mother. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p>Anna said the dog\u2019s owner later told her it was a rescue dog and she did not know its history.<\/p>\n<p>More than a month later, Mickey remains fearful of dogs, and Anna has started walking him to and from school because he is too scared to go alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he sees any dogs, not very close to him, but if he sees dogs, he stops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said he often seems frightened on trips out of the house, staying close to her side.<\/p>\n<p>The family was left about $1900 out of pocket after paying for the boy\u2019s medical treatment, vaccinations and travel costs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/TMTVIE5Z2VBQ7DWKDGUF3YEWWE.JPG\" alt=\"The family has racked up nearly $2000 in medical and travel expenses after the attack.
