I was allowed six, and I made a serious attempt to read every book I took home. (ABC News: Ashleigh Barraclough)<\/p>\n<p>Breaking free of Dewey Decimal<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-05\/mona-gallery-tasmania-reliant-on-gambling\/106764322\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Visitors are up, but Mona remains reliant on gambling funds<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Newly filed accounts give a first glimpse of Mona&#8217;s ultimate holding company, showing the loss-making gallery remains heavily reliant on gambling funds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Lijnzaad said the brief from Walsh for the library was &#8220;no Dewey Decimal&#8221; \u2014 the system libraries traditionally use to order and categorise books numerically.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That was really a challenge because if you&#8217;re not going to order things in Dewey Decimal order, how do you do them and sort of not go mad or just throw books randomly on the shelf?&#8221; Lijnzaad said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The company that designed Mona&#8217;s O app, Art Processors, was brought in to help.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Founding principal of Art Processors, Nic Whyte, said Dewey Decimal was &#8220;encoded in a 19th-century view of the world&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Breaking free of Dewey Decimal and enabling books to be placed anywhere means that we can form much broader relationships between the books,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nic Whyte gazes up at the bookshelves in a library. (ABC News: Ashleigh Barraclough)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On the Mona website, Walsh described his thought process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I want a system where we can move books arbitrarily, but still know where they are,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Here books become interwoven objects, with the links between them spun by librarians who are curators, and who can, as well as highlighting knowledge and learning, highlight artistry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Meanwhile, the O knows where everything is and can, if you like, reveal myriad connections to other items.
