After hitting pause on its steady uptick last year, the U.S. Open purse has upped the ante once again, offering its largest payout ever: $22.5 million, matching the Masters<\/a> as the largest of the major championship purses.<\/p>\n

This eye-watering sum<\/a> has grown rapidly over the last several years. In 2021, the U.S. Open purse was set at $12.5 million. It increased significantly to $17.5 million in 2022, then jumped to $20 million in 2023 and $21.5 million in 2024, where it remained for last year\u2019s edition.<\/p>\n

How does this mega purse compare to the rest of the PGA Tour season? The eight PGA Tour Signature Event purses that take place ahead of the FedEx Cup playoffs offer purses of $20 million each. The Players Championship remains the richest purse in golf at a total of $25 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While the overall Players Championship purse is higher than the payout offered by the Masters and U.S. Open, the winner\u2019s cut is the same for all three: a whopping $4.5 million. That means this year\u2019s U.S. Open champion will receive $200,000 more than last year\u2019s winner, J.J. Spaun<\/a>, who went home with $4.3 million. The runner-up at Shinnecock will receive a cool $2.43 million, and third and fourth place will clear seven figures too, with a payout of $1,532,530 and $1,074,363, respectively.<\/p>\n
