Image: InSyde Media <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/t.cfjump.com\/92797\/b\/298625\" rel=\"nofollow sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none; vertical-align: middle;\" src=\"https:\/\/t.cfjump.com\/92797\/a\/298625\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Grove team were largely the squad to beat at the Darwin Triple Crown and <a href=\"https:\/\/speedcafe.com\/supercars-news-darwin-triple-crown-teams-championship-points-pit-lane-order-townsville-500\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">snatched the lead in the teams\u2019 championship from Triple Eight.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, it won just one of the three races, courtesy of Kai Allen on Saturday, with slow stops delaying Payne on both Friday and Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s stung the most as the momentary bobble cost Payne track position to Cam Waters and allowed Anton De Pasquale to grab a lead he would never relinquish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just human error,\u201d said Grove of the Sunday slip-up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just didn\u2019t quite get the wheel on cleanly and it just compounded from there and unfortunately we gave up a race win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something we\u2019ll take pretty seriously and we\u2019ll take back to the factory and work on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s happened a few times this year and it\u2019s cost us a race win every time it\u2019s happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Payne finished third, fourth and second across the three races to close Broc Feeney\u2019s points lead to just 15, labelling the weekend \u201cbittersweet\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a little bit disappointed we didn\u2019t get the win today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt like the first stint, we executed that really well, and then it was kind of a bit tough from there following the guys and trying to catch back up to Anton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately we just didn\u2019t quite have enough for him at the end sitting in the hot air, just with the way the tyre works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It\u2019s] a little bit bittersweet but still really good points for the team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/speedcafe.com\/supercars-news-2026-matt-payne-grove-racing-future-statement-2027-decision-comments-reaction-gm-chevrolet-ford-team-18\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Payne issues statement confirming 2027 plans<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Payne had also lost a potential win at Ruapuna when a wheel came off following a pit stop, which also netted a teams\u2019 championship points penalty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Matt was very supportive in his comments of today, but he has every right to be frustrated with the result as we all are,\u201d Grove added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were not good enough today. It\u2019s not acceptable and we\u2019ll work hard to fix it. We know what our issues are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got very fast cars, which is cool, but we\u2019re getting a lot of things wrong at the same time with crew mistakes, driver mistakes and we\u2019re letting other people have results that we should be having.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to fix that and it\u2019s up to us to turn it around.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Matt Payne shared the Sunday podium with winner Anton De Pasquale and Cam Waters.
