Before the former Collingwood and Gold Coast player joined the Monday night panel, Melbourne great Garry Lyon was glowing of his efforts since taking the reins in Round 10.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to take you back to the initial statement, where we should have realised that this bloke\u2019s a little different to everyone else,\u201d Garry Lyon said on Fox Footy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s the 15th of May, and he says, among other things … right now, \u2018I probably don\u2019t think I\u2019m quite ready.\u2019 It\u2019s the football statement of the year (and) it\u2019s the masterstroke of the year.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know whether it was planned by Josh or he\u2019s just speaking from the heart, but it\u2019s set him up beautifully for what we\u2019ve now seen because he\u2019s got this studied indifference.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe more he tells you \u2018I don\u2019t want to coach\u2019 the more everyone suggests that he should. It\u2019s like chasing the hot girl, and you\u2019re never going to get it, and then you chase harder.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s where it\u2019s at and the players I think respond to his demeanour. I\u2019ve loved everything he\u2019s done. He\u2019s handled the media with aplomb. He\u2019s just played them all beautifully, and hasn\u2019t deviated from what he said from day one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carlton\u2019s forward-half intercept game has skyrocketed since the changing of the guard, while their points from forward half and points from turnover have also seen a notable uptick. <\/p>\n
Sydney premiership coach John Longmire and former Port Adelaide mastermind Ken Hinkley are among the senior coaching candidates available on the open market, though the former has recently expressed his interest in the incoming 19th AFL team Tasmania.<\/p>\n
Before being quizzed on his own coaching ambitions, Fraser spoke briefly to the changes at selection that have ensued since being in charge.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I was strong on, was creating an environment where selection integrity became really important. Every player on our list \u2014 whether they were an experienced player or younger player \u2014 had a mandate around getting better,\u201d Fraser said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to give our experienced players an opportunity to grow their game and develop their game in different areas. We wanted our younger players to continue to push their own career, ownership and development.<\/p>\n
\u201cOff the back of that, it gives us some flexibility and some options about how we want to structure the team up … it\u2019s been a really considered approach.\u201d<\/p>\n
Below is a transcript of Fraser\u2019s coaching discussion with AFL 360 hosts Gerard Whateley and Garry Lyon<\/p>\n
TRANSCRIPT:<\/p>\n
Gerard Whateley: \u201cHow much of what you\u2019re doing at the moment represents a finishing school to all the work you\u2019ve done previously?\u201d<\/p>\n
Josh Fraser: \u201cI find that a hard question to answer, in a sense that I\u2019ve probably landed at a position where I\u2019m not sure if you ever know you\u2019re completely ready. But, if you\u2019ve got the mindset around continuing to grow and get better… that\u2019s the space I\u2019m in at the moment. I feel like this opportunity in a lot of ways is fast tracking my development; it\u2019s given me a chance to test some of my philosophies and work as a collective with our coaching group. I\u2019m grateful for this opportunity, and I\u2019ve got no doubt at the end of it I\u2019ll be a better coach than what I am now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Garry Lyon: \u201cWe\u2019re not trying to trick you at all … how do you not \u2018know\u2019 (it\u2019s for you) is a question for you. Because you\u2019ve famously said in May \u2018I don\u2019t think I\u2019m quite ready yet\u2019, yet everything you\u2019ve talked about … you\u2019ve taken it all before you. How can you not know that you\u2019re ready?\u201d<\/p>\n
JF: I can only assume that you get to a stage where you have a chance to reflect on all your experiences. I\u2019m in a position now where I\u2019ve got a great deal of belief in what I can do as a coach, but I know I\u2019m not the finished product. Again, this opportunity has given me a chance to continue to grow. I don\u2019t know exactly when you know you\u2019re ready, or when you\u2019re not. But personally, I haven\u2019t lifted my eyes too much to consider what that might look like for me \u2014 other than staying really present to this moment, helping our footy club continue to get better, and make sure that at the end of my opportunity here as interim coach our footy club\u2019s better placed.<\/p>\n
GL: You\u2019ve got the admiration of the footy world for all sorts of reasons; for that approach that you\u2019ve taken, and then what you\u2019ve been able to do… is there a danger that you might miss an opportunity here? You haven\u2019t put an end to anything, obviously things change all the time. and you can change your mind. But, do you sit there going: \u2018Well, also I don\u2019t want to miss a chance?<\/p>\n
JF: All I can control is preparing myself as well as I possibly can. When, and if, an opportunity comes up to go through a process, I want to be well prepared for that. But, I don\u2019t expect anything. I guess my position is that, again, I understand I\u2019ve got things to continue to work on. I do have a strong confidence and belief in the experiences I\u2019ve had to this point, and I\u2019m excited about getting better. But again, I don\u2019t expect anything … I want to know that if I\u2019m good enough to go through that, that I can earn it \u2014 or not earn it \u2014 on my merits.<\/p>\n

GW: Is it possible that could yet be the Carlton job?<\/p>\n
JF: That personally is something I haven\u2019t considered \u2014 purely because my mandate right now is to help this football club grow and I haven\u2019t lifted my eyes to consider that.<\/p>\n
GW: Is this Carlton job a job worth fighting for?<\/p>\n
JF: I think any job would be a job worth fighting for, and this one in particular given the size of the Carlton Football Club. I\u2019ve felt this already (with) the power and support that we have as a club. I think it\u2019d be an exciting opportunity for whoever\u2019s ready to go through a process and earn that job.<\/p>\n
GL: Have you spoken to Michael Voss since he\u2019s left the job?<\/p>\n
JF: \u201cYeah, we\u2019ve exchanged text messages. I\u2019ve got a lot of admiration for \u2018Vossy\u2019; I always did as a player playing against him, and really enjoyed the opportunity to work with him for the short amount of time I did. I do want to catch up with Vossy at some point in time. I\u2019m sort of respectful of him having a break from the game as well, but he\u2019s someone I\u2019ve got a lot of admiration for and I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll cross paths with him.<\/p>\n
GL: Well he\u2019s about to become the dreaded enemy mate, he\u2019s going to join us here at Fox Footy so he\u2019ll be on the other side of it!<\/p>\n
