Carlton\u2019s\u2019 epic rise laid bare as Josh Fraser makes candid Voss reveal<\/a><\/p>\nSpeaking on Fox Footy\u2019s On the Couch, Hawthorn legend Jordan Lewis flagged the tricky balancing act Carlton is juggling.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe toughest thing they would have to deal with is separate the short-term success and what is the long-term goal,\u201d Lewis began on Monday night\u2019s program.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn terms of big picture, we\u2019re talking about draft points and Cody Walker has been that highly-spoken player as Pick 1 or Pick 2.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a difficult balance, I understand that. But winning puts them in a really precarious position, because it\u2019s associated with points. <\/p>\n
\u201cPick 1 Essendon will probably bid for (Port Adelaide Academy prospect) Dougie Cochrane. So, if (Walker is) Pick 2, they need 2481 points. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd if they climb out of the bottom eight, they don\u2019t get the 10 per cent discount. So there\u2019s all sorts of things that \ufeffpotentially could happen if Carlton keep winning.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s hurting them from (the draft points) system. That\u2019s the toughest thing you would have weigh up.\u201d<\/p>\n
While Lewis wasn\u2019t suggesting \u201cyou go out and deliberately lose\u201d to get \u201cbetter access to the draft,\u201d he simply highlighted the \u201ctricky situation\u201d for clubs needing to develop a winning culture while shoring up their long-term future.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou want that wining feeling and the culture to raise to a winning standard. But yet you\u2019ve still got to be thinking long-term. Because in three years, you don\u2019t want to be in the same spot,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s a hard conversation to have, isn\u2019t it? All fans want to win and progress and try and finish higher on the ladder, we totally understand that.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut if you\u2019re thinking getting this club back to being al long-term, successful club, these decisions have to be considered.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s visualise what a Walker bid would look like right now. <\/p>\n
Carlton currently holds its own Pick 5 and Sydney\u2019s Pick 17, which totals 2674 draft points and is more than enough for a Walker bid at Pick 2, even without the discount.<\/p>\n
However, if Carlton climbed into 10th place, it\u2019d only have 2234 points and fall over 200 points short of a Walker bid without going in deficit. <\/p>\n
\u201cQuite simply… if Carlton play finals, they put the Cody Walker pick in jeopardy,\u201d Tigers champion Jack Riewoldt added.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019ll have to change their draft position to acquire enough points (or) go into deficit.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd he is is a generational talent and a player that, many talk about Pick 2, he\u2019s pushing for Pick 1.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another route Carlton could explore is trading a star for a high-end pick. <\/p>\n
And Lewis, who\u2019s previously suggested the Blues should consider trading Patrick Cripps, still thinks the idea shouldn\u2019t be discounted, even despite the star skipper\u2019s resurgence in recent weeks. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s only for the fact if, they want to go to the draft, they don\u2019t have many draft picks,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe would be the only player that would have capital. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s only if he would want to and they would see that they wouldn\u2019t be winning a flag in the next five years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Geelong great Tom Hawkins added: \u201c(Jacob) Weitering is probably another one that is in the conversation with currency.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook at the Dogs, they\u2019re screaming out for a key defender.<\/p>\n
