Jay-Z<\/a>\u2019s performance at Roots Picnic earlier this month made headlines for a few reasons: Not only was it the first time in seven years the rapper performed live<\/a>, he also did so while showing off a fresh new afro<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For nearly a decade, Jay had been sporting locs fashioned into wicks, which his hairstylist Letisia \u201cLety\u201d Ravelo told GQ earlier this month<\/a> took six days to comb out with the help of a whole lot of products from C\u00e9cred, Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s<\/a> haircare line. Over the weekend, we learned more about the work that went into Hov\u2019s afro thanks to a video<\/a> narrated by Beyonc\u00e9 that gives a deeper look into the process and inspiration for the hairstyle.<\/p>\n

The clip, which was posted on the C\u00e9cred Youtube, reveals that Jay-Z\u2019s most drastic hairstyle changes were inspired by his family. First, he had the idea to grow out his hair into locs eight years ago thanks to his then-five-year-old daughter Blue. \u201cThe real reason Jay grew out his hair was to show Blue that her hair was like his hair,\u201d Beyonc\u00e9 recalls in the video. \u201cWe really wanted her to love and embrace every inch of her gorgeous curls.\u201d As Beyonc\u00e9 tells it, this gesture later inspired Blue to narrate Matthew Cherry\u2019s best-selling children\u2019s book Hair Love<\/a> about a black father styling his daughter\u2019s hair.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to this year. Months prior to debuting his new afro, Beyonc\u00e9 says Jay-Z shared that he wanted to make the change to emulate his father Adnis Reeves. \u201cHis dad used to rock a \u2018fro, so he wanted to rock a \u2018fro in his honor,\u201d Beyonc\u00e9 says.<\/p>\n

She goes on to explain that Jay exclusively used C\u00e9cred products in the process, including the brand\u2019s Detangling Spray<\/a>, Moisturizing Deep Conditioner<\/a>, and Moisture Sealing Lotion<\/a>. The effort required the support of many hands. But perhaps the most heartwarming detail about the process was that both Beyonc\u00e9 and Blue pitched in to undo the locks. According to Bey, the detangling took around one to two hours per wick, and they used a combination of combs and their hands. The process taught her that \u201cyou didn\u2019t have to be as aggressive [with the hair] and you could just let the products do some of the work.\u201d That meant leaving in some of the C\u00e9cred in (especially at the roots, she notes) to help with the process.<\/p>\n

After trimming the ends and giving Jay\u2019z hair a wash<\/a>, Ravelo gave Jay a braid-down, which resulted in the wavy texture of his afro. As Beyonc\u00e9 put it, \u201cI was pretty obsessed with Jay\u2019s locs.
