The Sydney Roosters<\/a> have appointed Kane Evans<\/a> to their NSW Cup<\/a> coaching staff as the former Tricolours forward rebuilds his life.<\/p>\n

During an emotional interview <\/a>with 100% Footy<\/a> earlier this month, Evans revealed how struggles with his sexuality led to substance abuse and suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n

The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a> reports the Roosters offered Evans a temporary assistant coaching role with the club\u2019s reserve grade team last week. The team is coached by Brett Morris<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Evans had been working in scaffolding and was reportedly exposed to homophobic slurs on various job sites recently.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s only a small role, we\u2019re trying to help him find a proper job out there,\u201d club owner and chairman Nick Politis<\/a> told the SMH. <\/p>\n

\u201cI saw him the other day at training wearing all the gear. He loves it, he was glad to feel a part of something again, and it was nice to see him back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roosters coach Trent Robinson<\/a> also invited Evans to the NRL<\/a> team\u2019s captain\u2019s run.<\/p>\n

Evans spent the first four seasons of his eight-year NRL career at Bondi and spoke of the respect he has for the premiership-winning coach.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe called me just to let me know [that] the Roosters is still my home, and that they\u2019ve got my back in whatever I\u2019m facing,\u201d Evans said on 100% Footy. <\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Robbo\u2019, out of his own money, paid four weeks of my rent, because I had just got into a place that week.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking after the interview aired, Robinson said: \u201cI\u2019m\u00a0really proud of the club, but we still had a guy here for six years that didn\u2019t feel open enough to say that he was gay while he was here.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are no plans for Evans to make a comeback on the field, although there\u2019s hope he could play for the Glebe Dirty Reds in the Ron Massey Cup later in the year.<\/p>\n
