{"id":756472,"date":"2026-06-24T04:29:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T04:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/756472\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T04:29:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T04:29:08","slug":"headline-inflation-eases-but-underlying-inflation-highest-since-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/756472\/","title":{"rendered":"Headline inflation eases, but underlying inflation highest since 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Headline inflation eased in May, with consumer prices increasing at an annual pace of 4 per cent, down from 4.2 per cent in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Automotive fuel prices dropped by 11.9 per cent in May, on lower global fuel prices, and that helped to drag headline inflation down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But trimmed mean inflation, the Reserve Bank&#8217;s preferred measure of underlying inflation, still increased to 3.6 per cent in May, up from 3.4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Underlying inflation allows economists to look beneath the daily noise of random price movements to see what the economy&#8217;s broader inflationary pressures are looking like.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-16\/reserve-bank-keep-rates-on-hold-june-2026\/106803692\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reserve Bank keeps interest rate at 4.35pc<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Reserve Bank keeps the interest rate at 4.35pc as Australia&#8217;s economy slows down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">And the Bureau of Statistics says underlying inflation is now running at its highest annual pace since the September quarter of 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The RBA has warned that inflation will trend higher in coming months as the fallout from the global energy shock keeps working its way through Australia&#8217;s supply chains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Today&#8217;s CPI data is an unwelcome reminder that Australia&#8217;s inflation problem is not yet solved, with another rate hike in 2026 still likely,&#8221; Deloitte Access Economics partner Stephen Smith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The economy <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-03\/gdp-march-quarter-2026-australia\/106753788\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106753788\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slowed sharply<\/a> in the March quarter, households are cautious, and the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-21\/unemployment-rate-jumps-4-5-per-cent\/106705576\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106705576\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">labour market is cooling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That may normally suggest the central bank needs to be patient. But with underlying inflation now above the 2.5 per cent target for almost five years, today&#8217;s result means the Reserve Bank must remain vigilant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An uncomfortable situation, a mixed bag<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Harry Murphy Cruise from Oxford Economics Australia said underlying inflation was the core challenge for the RBA at the moment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-03\/gdp-march-quarter-2026-australia\/106753788\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia&#8217;s economy grew at an annual pace of 2.5 per cent in the March quarter<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australia&#8217;s economy grew at an annual rate of 2.5 per cent in the March quarter, the same as in the previous quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Higher input, freight and agricultural costs are still passing through to consumer prices, meaning inflation pressures will take time to fade, even after oil prices normalise,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Still, the outlook has improved materially over recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Developments over the past fortnight suggest we are closer to the end of the Middle East conflict than the start.
