Warner Bros. announced that the sequel to the 1998 cult classic is coming on September 18, 2026. But that\u2019s not the only exciting news. Both Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman<\/a> have returned!<\/p>\n

The pair, who now both have a Best Actress in a Leading Role Oscar<\/a> apiece, starred in Practical Magic as the Owens sisters, Sally and Gillian.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe come to this place for magic,\u201d said Nicole Kidman on stage with Sandra Bullock at the 2026 CinemaCon to promote the upcoming film. <\/p>\n

Nicole went on to share some details about the film\u2019s plot.<\/p>\n

\u201cMidnight margaritas, jumping off the roof and also have our past catching up with us,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have our destinies, and the family. I think it\u2019s going to be really, really fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGetting to return to these characters that have been so loved and so shared, it really has been magical,\u201d she continued. \u201cAnd being back together, it just clicked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe rebuilt the original house on the cliff,\u201d said Sandra. \u201cWe filled that house with many old and new characters that you\u2019ll love and brought Alice Hoffman\u2019s Book of Magic to life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official trailer has finally been released (watch it above). It features the iconic song, a cup stirring itself and Nicole and Sandra\u2019s characters explaining their curse to Lee Pace, who\u2019s joining the cast. <\/p>\n

This has led fans to believe that they didn\u2019t actually break the curse in the first film. Further evidenced by Aidan Quinn, who was the love interest of Sandra Bullock\u2019s Sally Owens not joining the cast list.<\/p>\n

The original film, based on the book of the same name<\/a> by Alice Hoffman, follows Sally (played by Sandra) and Gillian (played by Nicole) as they deal with their family curse: any man an Owens woman falls in love with dies.<\/p>\n

In terms of plot, considering Sandra\u2019s comment, it appears that Practical Magic 2 will be an adaptation of The Book of Magic. In it, Sally and Gillian try to save the man Sally\u2019s now-grown-up daughter loves from the Owens curse.<\/p>\n

Is there really a Practical Magic 2 coming out?<\/p>\n

Yes! Filming has officially wrapped for Practical Magic 2. <\/p>\n

We know that Akiva Goldsman, of The Da Vinci Code fame and who wrote the first Practical Magic, is writing the screenplay for the Practical Magic sequel and Denise Di Novi, of Little Women fame and who produced the first Practical Magic, is producing.<\/p>\n

Sandra and Nicole are producing the Practical Magic sequel, too.<\/p>\n

What is the spin-off of Practical Magic?<\/p>\n

Back in 2019, HBO Max<\/a> was developing a Practical Magic spinoff series that was going to be based on Alice\u2019s prequel book, titled Rules of Magic, but production halted for unknown reasons.<\/p>\n

Rules of Magic (the book) follows sisters Franny and Jet Owens (played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest in the 1998 film) as they navigate the Owens curse in 1960s New York with their brother Vincent. <\/p>\n

Perhaps if the Practical Magic sequel is a success, the Rules of Magic series adaptation might go back into development\u2026 Fingers crossed!<\/p>\n

Who stars in Practical Magic 2?<\/p>\n

As aforementioned, both Nicole and Sandra will reprise their roles in the sequel. Original cast members Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest will also reprise their roles.<\/p>\n

In upsetting news to many fans of the original film, Evan Rachel Wood will not be reprising her role as Kylie Owens, Sandra Bullock\u2019s character\u2019s elder daughter.<\/p>\n

She wrote, \u201cI offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line. I was told they are recasting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joining the cast are Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Joey King. Joey recently sported a red hairdo at Wimbledon 2025<\/a>, and Maisie is a brunette. At first, it was speculated that the two could be playing younger versions of Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest\u2019s characters. However, they are playing Sandra\u2019s daughters, Kylie and Antonia, from the first movie, now grown up and potentially dealing with the return of the Owens\u2019 curse.<\/p>\n

Also joining the case are Lee Pace (Foundation), Solly McLeod (House of the Dragon), and Xolo Maridue\u00f1a (Cobra Kai). However, there are no details about what roles the men are playing. Given the ages of Solly and Xolo, it could be that they are playing opposite Joey and Maisie\u2019s characters. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Aidan Quinn will not be reprising his role as Gary Hallet, the investigator who falls in love with Sally Owens.<\/p>\n

When does Practical Magic 2 release?<\/p>\n

As we mentioned above, the sequel won\u2019t be released until September 18, 2026. <\/p>\n

Until then we\u2019ll be throwing spilt salt over our left shoulder, keeping rosemary by our garden gate, planting lavender for luck, and falling in love whenever we can\u2026<\/p>\n
