(ABC Landline: Kerry Staight)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is also expected to save the agricultural sector millions of dollars in the future and protect native vegetation and animal species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Farmer Rick Morris,\u00a0who was the chair of Agriculture Kangaroo Island at the time of the fires, said the blackened landscape provided the island its only chance to eliminate feral pigs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Before the fires, it was estimated about 10,000 feral pigs roamed wild on the island, causing $1 million damage annually to paddocks and natural habitats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">With the majority of the feral pigs perishing, and tree and bush cover burnt, Mr Morris said politicians came &#8220;with a bit of money&#8221; which led to the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-07-17\/feral-pigs-kangaroo-island-sa-eradication\/100293826\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100293826\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kangaroo Island Feral Pig Eradication Program<\/a> being established.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man wearing a beanie in a green paddock with sheep in the background\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/d67629edcc8b0590da51ebb3eb0528b7.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Rick Morris was the chair of Agriculture Kangaroo Island at the time of the devastating 2019\/2020 bushfires. (ABC South East SA: Caroline Horn)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Since 2020, 878 feral pigs have been removed through the use of thermal imaging-assisted helicopter culling, ground shooting, detector dogs and ground baiting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In March 2024, the last three feral pigs were detected on the property next to Mr Morris&#8217;s sheep farm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The three sows were killed, examined and found never to have bred.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-19\/kangaroo-island-pet-cat-ban-invasive-species-council-sa\/106469132\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Council considering cat ban<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Kangaroo Island Council considers banning introduction of all cats to the island \u2013 a move the mayor is calling &#8220;last cat policy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Morris said pig numbers became &#8220;far worse&#8221; from the early 2000s when more of the island was converted to plantations rather than agricultural usage, with fewer farmers around to keep the population in check.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The little bit of damage we were receiving turned into major damage,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It would be nothing to have a paddock turned upside down overnight with large mobs of feral pigs, so all of a sudden we&#8217;re facing a major challenge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>High-tech campaign<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Department for Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA) principal biosecurity officer for pest animals Brad Page is one of the people being credited with driving the program.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said being able to declare Kangaroo Island officially feral pig free after two years was &#8220;a massive achievement&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Page said helicopters and ground monitoring have been used to search for any sign of pigs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve also been doing forensic analyses of environmental DNA, seeing if there&#8217;s any of that remaining in the creeks and waterways on Kangaroo Island,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In addition, 1.475 million images captured by 350 cameras installed in remote areas of the Flinders Chase National Park have been scanned by artificial intelligence processes for any evidence of pigs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man standing next to a gum tree\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/93e9e58e32098ff5a52d56192c140fef.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Brad Page says eradicating feral pigs from the island is a big achievement. (ABC South East SA: Caroline Horn)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said it had been a great collaborative effort that included PIRSA, the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board and landholders and that the program had received $7.5 million in funding from the federal and state governments and Livestock SA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The success of this program cannot be underestimated.
