{"id":760510,"date":"2026-06-26T01:10:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T01:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/760510\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T01:10:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T01:10:14","slug":"scientists-studied-the-laughter-of-apes-and-discovered-something-incredibly-human-like","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/760510\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists studied the laughter of apes \u2013 and discovered something incredibly human-like"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although the connection might seem unexpected, looking deeper into the intricacies of laughter offers a rare glimpse at the origins of speech itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Laughter in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/great-ape-guide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">great apes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/apes-vs-humans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">humans<\/a> is inherently repetitive and cyclic \u2013 the well-known\u00a0ha-ha-ha-ha. By studying the subtle variations in how that rhythm is timed and structured across different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/speciation-guide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">species<\/a>, scientists can learn how breathing, sound-making and vocal control \u2013 all important building blocks of speech \u2013 have evolved over time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All major branches of the Hominidae family have evolved unique ways of communicating through sound, shaped by their specific needs and circumstances. The one remaining connection is laughter \u2013 we share it with all great apes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-chimpanzees\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chimpanzees<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/bonobo-guide-where-they-live-how-theyre-related-to-chimps-and-why-they-have-such-a-fascinating-society\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bonobos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/gorilla-facts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gorillas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-orangutans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">orangutans<\/a>). But until now, little was known about its defining feature: rhythm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a new\u00a0study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42003-026-10499-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">published in the journal\u00a0Communications Biology<\/a>, researchers analysed recordings of spontaneous laughter from four orangutans, two gorillas, three bonobos, four chimpanzees and four humans. Across 140 laughter sequences, they found all species\u2019 laughter follows the same general pattern: evenly-spaced rhythmic intervals between successive sounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A bonobo laugh. Speech leaves no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/prehistoric-life\/weird-fossils\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fossils<\/a>, and complex language exists only in our own species. But we&#8217;ve found a 15-million-year-old clue in an unexpected place: our laughter,\u201d says Chiara De Gregorio, an honorary research associate at the University of Warwick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike speech, laughter is shared by all living great apes. By comparing how different species laugh, we can see that a basic rhythmic structure has remained unchanged since our last common ancestor. That&#8217;s extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This basic underlying rhythm is where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/how-many-human-species-have-there-been\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">human<\/a> laughter diverges. At some point, our laughter evolved into something faster and more variable, and more crucially \u2013 we gained the ability to control when and how it occurs.<\/p>\n<p>A nervous chuckle, a quiet giggle, a snicker, a full-belly cackle \u2013 we use these various ways of laughing in different social situations to communicate emotions and intentions. Out of all great apes, humans alone possess that amount of control over their laughter.<\/p>\n<p>The last common ancestor of all living great apes, including humans, is estimated to have existed approximately 15 million years ago. According to the researchers\u2019 theory, this newly discovered rhythmic structure within laughter was already present in that common ancestor \u2013 and has remained remarkably well conserved until today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A gorilla laugh.
