ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. \u2014 You know that GIF of Tom Brady<\/a>, seething so deeply on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers bench that he smashes his tablet to bits?<\/p>\n

C.J. Gardner-Johnson made him do that.<\/p>\n

His trash-talking antics and ball-hawking prowess have caused those around him to react abruptly. His belligerence prompted two opposing receivers \u2014 plus New Orleans Saints teammate Michael Thomas at practice \u2014 to throw punches at him.<\/p>\n

Every boss Gardner-Johnson played for has either traded him, declined to re-sign him or released him.<\/p>\n

When the versatile defensive back signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Buffalo Bills in March, it made his seventh roster in three and a half years and fourth in the last 15 months despite being among the NFL\u2019s most dangerous takeaway artists.<\/p>\n

A ruthless trash talker, skeleton-rattling tackler and serial confrontationist, Gardner-Johnson \u2014 or maybe more accurately his volcanic alter-ego, Ceedy Duce \u2014 wears people out.<\/p>\n

He has been accused of being self-absorbed, too much of a locker-room lawyer, unwilling to hold himself accountable. His welcome eroded in New Orleans after he was excused from training camp practices<\/a> amid a contract squabble.\u00a0His second turn with the Philadelphia Eagles included public<\/a> friction<\/a> with star cornerback and captain Darius Slay.<\/p>\n

Gardner-Johnson has been named the NFL\u2019s most annoying player<\/a> and its biggest trash talker in The Athletic\u2019s anonymous annual player polls. He also has been fined 13 times for $194,924 over his seven NFL seasons.<\/p>\n

Beyond his rookie contract, he hasn\u2019t been anywhere longer than a season. Last year alone, the Houston Texans dumped him after three games, and the Baltimore Ravens cut him from their practice squad after a week before he finally stuck with the Chicago Bears.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a scary statement for me: I make plays and still don\u2019t know my future,\u201d Gardner-Johnson said. \u201cGuys who make plays have guaranteed futures. You\u2019ve got guys running people over in their cars, DUIs, killing people, hitting females.<\/p>\n

\u201cI make plays, but they say, \u2018We\u2019re only going to keep you for three months out the year.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Gardner-Johnson, however, has won almost everywhere he has been.<\/p>\n

With five different defensive coordinators, countless schemes and all the various ways he has been used, Gardner-Johnson\u2019s teams never have posted a losing record; they\u2019ve missed the playoffs only once. He helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl in the 2022 season, was not re-signed, then was brought back two years later for their Lombardi Trophy run.<\/p>\n

For a recent interview with The Athletic in the Bills\u2019 field house, Gardner-Johnson didn\u2019t want to sit. He wanted to walk while he talked. For the next half-hour, he paced along the practice field, frequently stopping when he wanted to emphasize his point.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the narratives is I\u2019m a cancer in the locker room,\u201d Gardner-Johnson said. \u201cThat just came out when? After Houston? Where was that after the Super Bowl loss? Where was that after the Super Bowl win? When we do our homework and really think about it, where have I been a cancer?<\/p>\n

\u201cMy grandma always told me, \u2018You need to be patient to be cocky.\u2019 That\u2019s just what it is. I\u2019ve been patient enough to be blessed, patient enough to win a Super Bowl. That\u2019s my ultimate goal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been slapped in the face by the business so many times to the point where it\u2019s, like \u2026 I don\u2019t look at other guys no more. I look at myself and how I can affect things, just go in the building, make plays.\u201d
The disconnect has followed Gardner-Johnson throughout his career. He is a Super Bowl champion, one of the game\u2019s most passionate players and a proven difference-maker. Yet every stop has been relatively short, often ending in a complicated breakup. Can that change in Buffalo?<\/p>\n

Gardner-Johnson is his own best hype man. He brags in part because he doesn\u2019t think he has gotten the praise he deserves.<\/p>\n

In the process, he occasionally exaggerates his accomplishments. He repeatedly claimed he has led the NFL in interceptions twice; he tied for the 2022 title and tied for third in 2024 with six interceptions each season. He\u2019ll also widen his resume to include almost-achievements. He claimed he should have three Super Bowl rings, citing Jared Cook\u2019s fumble against the Buccaneers in the playoffs following the 2020 season and the atrocious field conditions when the Kansas City Chiefs edged the Eagles in State Farm Stadium.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t name no other safety in the NFL that has done what I\u2019ve done,\u201d Gardner-Johnson said. \u201cGo look at the body of work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gardner-Johnson has gone by many names. He was Chauncey Gardner at the University of Florida, added Johnson in honor of his stepfather and became known as C.J. as a Saints rookie. His rapper persona goes by SOG Ceedy.<\/p>\n

Gardner-Johnson is vague when explaining another nickname \u2014 Ceedy Duce, the alter ego he says emerges only for games.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t want anybody to talk to me as Ceedy Duce,\u201d Gardner-Johnson said. \u201cWhen I\u2019m on the field, that\u2019s when it\u2019ll come out. Somebody would have to bring it out of me. You gotta get me pissed.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople in the NFL always be, like, \u2018Oh, why you got so many names?\u2019 Well, I went through a lot of s\u2014. So I had to separate who I was to where I feel like Ceedy is a person that nobody ever wants to see. If you ever meet him, you might be in trouble. That\u2019s why I keep away from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

As he continued to pace and talk in the Bills\u2019 practice facility, he carried his helmet by the facemask with white Nike cleats stuffed inside. He writes reminders on them. Near the swooshes are \u201cTRUST HIM,\u201d \u201cALL ACTION,\u201d \u201cNO WORDS\u201d and \u201cNO REGRETS.\u201d On each heel is \u201cEOM.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEyes on me,\u201d he explained. \u201cFor my kids. My kids are watching me, so I\u2019ve got to be the best me. I\u2019ve got to be the best dad, the best student, the best whatever it may be. Whether they can see me or can\u2019t see me, those eyes are always on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked for his kids\u2019 names, he grabbed a notepad and jotted them down along with their ages: 15, 12, 7, 3, 3, 2 and 1.<\/p>\n

Gardner-Johnson is 28. The math is impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n

How did he handle it? That\u2019s one part of his life he doesn\u2019t choose to talk about.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry about that,\u201d he replied. \u201cI told you I had to go through some s\u2014. I was young, 13, 14 years old, really going through a lot. But that don\u2019t bother me.\u201d<\/p>\n

In July 2025, after the Eagles traded him and before he and the Texans got crossways, Gardner-Johnson appeared on \u201cThe Pivot Podcast\u201d<\/a> with co-hosts and former NFL players Fred Taylor, Ryan Clark and Channing Crowder to discuss all the controversy that follows him. That interview began with Gardner-Johnson addressing and denying an ex-girlfriend\u2019s claim that he put out a hit on New York Giants receiver Malik Nabers. The third topic detailed the vulgar hoodie<\/a> Gardner-Johnson wore in the Eagles\u2019 championship parade to troll Taylor Swift\u2019s fans.<\/p>\n

The hourlong podcast was another reminder of the outrageousness that ensues wherever he goes \u2014 and why he doesn\u2019t stay in one place long.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did \u2018The Pivot\u2019 interview, and people said, \u2018Oh, he\u2019s crazy! We told you that\u2019s why Philly got rid of him.\u2019 That\u2019s my life,\u201d Gardner-Johnson told The Athletic. \u201cThat\u2019s why I say \u2018F\u2014 my critics.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI love the media, but I truly don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen next. They put something out and people go, \u2018Well, you said this!\u2019 I did. I apologize. If I\u2019m going to jail for it, let me know. Past couple years, I just try to stay out of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he doesn\u2019t always succeed in keeping thoughts to himself \u2014 in the moment, or when looking back.<\/p>\n

Gardner-Johnson seemed to take glee in what he considers a dismantling of Philadelphia\u2019s championship squad. The Eagles on June 1 traded star receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots. Gardner-Johnson also chided them for losing free-agent safety Reed Blankenship to the Texans as a roundabout replacement for himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cSaquon (Barkley), I hope you\u2019re happy!\u201d Gardner-Johnson said. \u201cYou see that band\u2019s getting broken up.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the Texans dumped Gardner-Johnson after Week 3<\/a>, ESPN reported he had struggled to learn DeMeco Ryans\u2019 defensive scheme, was at fault for several costly coverage breakdowns and \u201crefused to take responsibility for his mistakes, rubbing his teammates the wrong way.\u201d Houston\u2019s KPRC Channel 2 reported Gardner-Johnson exhausted the team by complaining about his role, requesting a trade and criticizing teammates, notably the size of one player\u2019s contract.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a lie,\u201d Gardner-Johnson said. \u201cI never said s\u2014 about nobody\u2019s contract. I\u2019m on a $33 million deal. Why the f\u2014 would I talk about somebody\u2019s contract?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gardner-Johnson said his experience with the Texans began to go south at training camp in West Virginia, where he said he got into a confrontation with \u201cthe GM\u2019s friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf y\u2019all going to cut me, cut me,\u201d Gardner-Johnson said. \u201cBut I\u2019ll give nobody reasons to cut me. I haven\u2019t. I don\u2019t. I\u2019m not a cancer. There\u2019s nobody in this locker room that says, \u2018Chauncey\u2019s a problem.\u2019 The media loves me. The only thing that\u2019ll do it is something that triggers somebody that has a say in the building that can alter somebody else\u2019s mind. That happens every time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s how I got (cut) in Houston. One person that\u2019s not technically a part of the organization called me a B-word at Greenbrier. I get out my body; he says something to the GM, and the next thing I\u2019m cut.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Texans declined to comment.<\/p>\n

The Ravens signed Gardner-Johnson on Oct. 7, the same day they traded outside linebacker Odafe Oweh and a seventh-round draft choice for Los Angeles Chargers safety Alohi Gilman and a fifth-round pick. Gilman played at Notre Dame alongside Ravens All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton and was named the starter.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow does that sound?\u201d Gardner-Johnson said, stretching his arms out wide with his palms up. \u201cThey sign you in the middle of the night with the plan for you to play that week, then literally 14 hours later they trade for a safety and tell you, \u2018Oh, we\u2019re going to start him and keep you on the practice squad.\u2019 I\u2019m a Super Bowl champion!\u201d<\/p>\n

He signed with Chicago two weeks later, a move that reunited him with his old Saints defensive coordinator, Dennis Allen. In 11 games, including in the playoffs, Gardner-Johnson recorded two interceptions, a forced fumble and a career-high three sacks.<\/p>\n

But he knew he wouldn\u2019t be back.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a firecracker, but let\u2019s take the body of work: never legally been in trouble; never physically harmed a person,\u201d Gardner-Johnson said. \u201cBut I haven\u2019t been a captain ever in my life. They say, \u2018You gotta lead the right way.\u2019 My definition of leading is winning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of captains in this league \u2014 and I want this to come out \u2014 that\u2019s just for jersey sales. I can show you three, four captains right now that I wouldn\u2019t get behind. Why would I get behind anybody that doesn\u2019t believe in himself?\u00a0I\u2019ve played for plenty of false captains, but I gotta fake it, like, \u2018That\u2019s my leader!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll lead by my actions on the field. That \u2018C\u2019 don\u2019t make me. Because when somebody comes up to me on the sideline and says, \u201cWe need a play from you,\u201d that lets me know everything I need to know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gardner-Johnson is proud of his community service. Two days after making his Bears debut last season, Gardner-Johnson began making appearances around the Chicagoland area with his freshly created Ceedy Cares Foundation<\/a>. The nonprofit\u2019s stated mission is \u201cto uplift and empower the next generation, building better futures for kids both on and off the field\u201d through mentorship and community outreach.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I win Walter Payton Man of the Year, I\u2019m going to thank everybody who doubted me,\u201d Gardner-Johnson said. \u201cThat\u2019s everybody until now.\u00a0People already thinking I\u2019m going to get cut from Buffalo.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Bills signed him to start at safety alongside Cole Bishop<\/a>, but they are aware of Gardner-Johnson\u2019s reputation. They also brought back former starter Damar Hamlin and added Geno Stone, a Cincinnati Bengals starter the past three seasons.<\/p>\n

Buffalo has been unstable at safety since Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer anchored the defensive backfield. Each was brought back to help settle a position that endured Bishop\u2019s early learning curve, Hamlin\u2019s return from cardiac arrest and disappointing production from Taylor Rapp.<\/p>\n

Bills football boss Brandon Beane heavily vetted Gardner-Johnson before signing him and received two crucial endorsements. Defensive quality control coach Craig Robertson played linebacker for New Orleans when Gardner-Johnson was there. New receiver D.J. Moore played with Gardner-Johnson last year in Chicago.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talked about just making sure, \u2018You\u2019ve got to be a good teammate,\u2019\u201d Beane said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want any cheap shots in practice or anything like that. You want to keep it in between those lines, but you do want his edge.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Bills needn\u2019t worry whether Gardner-Johnson will deliver in that regard.<\/p>\n

Bills defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard has spoken about how loud, energetic and involved Gardner-Johnson has been despite being a newcomer.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe loves football, right?\u201d Leonhard said. \u201cThe day-to-day, the workouts, the meetings, he\u2019s a guy who loves being in the building.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s trying to be a leader, man. He really wants to be that. So it\u2019s exciting, being able to work with guys that really want to be in front of the room and talk and hold people accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gardner-Johnson is wearing No. 22 with Buffalo because it was what he wore in New Orleans while fighting to establish himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like a kid again,\u201d Gardner-Johnson said. \u201cI feel like me again, feel like the kid who got drafted and had to prove himself again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gardner-Johnson was asked if he\u2019d ever felt truly appreciated. He paused for a few seconds and said Buffalo is the only place \u2014 so far. He expressed gratitude that Moore and Robertson vouched for him and said it felt good to hear how badly secondary coach Joe Danna and free-agent edge rusher Bradley Chubb wanted him.<\/p>\n

Gardner-Johnson made a long-term prediction with a caveat underscored by his short-term existence.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s humbling. I\u2019ve got to be humble,\u201d Gardner-Johnson said. \u201cI\u2019ve got to be grateful because you don\u2019t know, but s\u2014 can change! You\u2019ve got to look at how they did the offseason here. Everybody got a nice little deal except me. That\u2019s not a shot at the organization. That\u2019s more so offering me a chance to get what them guys got.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to win the next two out of three Super Bowls. How? Look where they placed me at. Look who\u2019s my quarterback.
