Adam Kingsley labelled the 50m penalty paid against Finn Callaghan for an interchange infringement in Greater Western Sydney\u2019s loss to Hawthorn<\/a> as \u201cexcessive\u201d.<\/p>\n

Hawk Calsher Dear was lining up for goal 40m out when Callaghan was called for incorrectly entering the field of play, leading to a 50m penalty and goal for Dear.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters post-game, Kingsley claimed he hadn\u2019t seen footage of the infringement before a reporter said it appeared Callaghan \u201cstepped an inch or two outside the line\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn inch or two?\u201d Kingsley responded. \u201cOK \u2026 50m penalty seems a bit excessive. Walk-in goal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean he (Dear) could\u2019ve still kicked the goal (from 40m out), who knows? He\u2019s a pretty good kick.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was told it was an interchange infringement, but I didn\u2019t see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if the Giants would look to clarify the call with the AFL, Kingsley said: \u201cNot really.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Giants coach said he had bigger issues to ponder ahead of their clash with ladder-leaders Fremantle after his engine room broke down for the second week running. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe got dominated from the stoppage,\u201d said Kingsley. \u201cObliterated, really.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019m hesitant to talk about a 10-minute patch in the second quarter, because that was clearly the biggest issue that we had.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kingsley will need to find answers fast \u2013 and his magnet moves, involving a slate of players switching positions, may just be the catalyst for change.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to increase our versatility,\u201d Kingsley said. \u201cWe need to be able to go to a plan B, when plan A\u2019s not working.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like that was a reasonably good level. \u201c<\/p>\n

But clearance wasn\u2019t their only issue. <\/p>\n

The once perilous Orange Tsunami is now akin to a small wave break.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not finding that flow out of the back half as well as what we have in the past, so we\u2019ll keep working on that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe couldn\u2019t move the ball effectively. Some basic turnovers, inability to cope with the pressure. That\u2019s been one of our biggest issues when we\u2019re not playing anywhere near our best, and unfortunately it was again tonight.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe game\u2019s not clicking, but we don\u2019t give up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe keep trying to the last second.\u201d<\/p>\n

Injuries to Max Gruzewski and Brent Daniels<\/a> don\u2019t soften the blow either. <\/p>\n

Kingsley confirmed that Daniels \u2013 who played just five games last year due to an abdominal injury \u2013 will be sent for scans on his calf.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell said there was \u201cno concern\u201d surrounding livewire Nick Watson\u2019s hamstring injury.<\/p>\n

Watson set up the win with three goals in eight minutes before exiting the contest early. <\/p>\n

Hawthorn\u2019s highest rated player in 2026, Watson remains key to the side\u2019s evolution from a \u201csecond-tier team\u201d, according to Mitchell, into one that can consistently challenge the best.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think if you look at our season 2025, we didn\u2019t play many bad games, but we couldn\u2019t quite beat the best,\u201d said Mitchell.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you watched us against the best sides, we just looked just like a second-tier team.\u201d<\/p>\n

A scrappy win over the Giants may not exemplify a top-tier performance, but it exposed a new source of dominance for Hawthorn: Its midfield.<\/p>\n

The return of Will Day and the rise of Cam Mackenzie have breathed new life into its engine room.<\/p>\n

\u201dWe look at someone like Cam Mackenzie tonight, I think he was the highest pressure player on the ground. I was super impressed,\u201d Mitchell said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe narrative from me has been that our midfield has got a lot of flexibility. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very pleased with how they perform.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hawthorn\u2019s midfield has often been its downfall, but strong clearance performances are providing new ways to win.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like we\u2019re more competitive against the best this season than we have been in the past,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201dWe\u2019re closer than we were.\u201c<\/p>\n

The showing secured the four points, but it wasn\u2019t completely free of cause for alarm. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was worried,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201c I did think we opened the door a bit for them, so I was a bit disappointed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t get the game to bed until quite late again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe tried to do a couple of things which were a little bit exploratory and that didn\u2019t really work. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think the growth from it will be important in this next part of the season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hawthorn will take on Melbourne in Launceston next week, before returning to the MCG to face Carlton, Richmond and Essendon.<\/p>\n
