Courteney and David got married in June 1999, officially separated in October 2010 and their divorce went through in May 2013.<\/p>\n
Speaking previously on NBC\u2019s Running Wild With Bear Grylls, Courteney opened up about the split, saying: \u201cI think that we were such good friends. We found ourselves leading separate lives and just coexisting and being great friends, but not having the intimacy that…is so important in a relationship. I think you really need to work in a relationship, and I think that we tried. We\u2019re just really different, too. I\u2019m the polar opposite of him. That can be great for a lot of things, but I need this kind of real, one-on-one connection. And I don\u2019t know. I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a dramatic ending. It was more of a…just, I don\u2019t know. I\u2019ve really been…No one\u2019s ever asked me in this way, so I haven\u2019t really thought about it like this,\u201d she said. \u201cI mean, as divorces go, I would say it\u2019s one of the better ones. For sure. We\u2019re good co-parents together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Courteney and Johnny got engaged in 2014 after six months of dating but split the following year.<\/p>\n
They reconciled in 2016 and Courteney insisted they were both determined to make the relationship work.<\/p>\n
She told Bear Grylls: \u201cWe were engaged for over a year and then we broke up. There\u2019s something about…you know, he\u2019s from Ireland. And the way he regards love is precious. We have to treat it in a different way. It\u2019s more special. You coddle it. So, I didn\u2019t know how to regard love the way he does. And it definitely made a lot of mistakes that I see, whether it\u2019s co-dependency or people-pleasing. I didn\u2019t know how to bring it in. It was always external. I definitely have learned a lot, and no matter what, I will be a better person from that breakup, even though it was so brutal.\u201d<\/p>\n
They were first introduced by mutual friends, including Ed Sheeran, whom Johnny has worked with on songs including Shape Of You, Photograph, Galway Girl, Bad Habits, and Shivers.<\/p>\n
