The Coalition would scale back the state’s largest renewable energy zone in the New England area.

A solar farm near Wagga Wagga.

The announcement comes as the Minns government has ramped up attacks on the Coalition’s clean energy credentials, seeking to take advantage of a growing schism between the Liberal and Nationals. Last November, the NSW Nationals jettisoned the party’s commitment to net zero by 2050.

The former Coalition government established five renewable energy zones to group wind, solar and storage projects as part of the state’s transition away from coal-fired power plants. However, delays and disputes with affected communities have intensified backlash to the projects.

Much of the furore has focused on the New England energy zone. Plans for a three-kilometre-wide transmission corridor has infuriated farmers and local governments, who say the infrastructure will destroy productive agriculture land and could create bushfire risks.

The Coalition claimed the creation of the three-city renewable energy zones would generate power closer to areas of demand, removing the need for the 500kV transmission line corridor.

Opposition leader Kellie Sloane said producing cheaper energy bills and greater economic resilience required generating energy closer to demand.

NSW Nationals leader Gurmesh Singh and Liberal leader Kellie Sloane have announced the Coalition would recalibrate the state’s renewable energy rollout.Sitthixay Ditthavong

“NSW needs new generation and storage as coal retires, but the transition must be affordable, deliverable and undertaken in partnership with communities,” she said.

A separate renewable energy zone in the state’s Far West would be scoped under the plan. Nationals leader Gurmesh Singh said delivering renewables projects in areas with lower population density and fewer land-use conflicts was an opportunity to expand and diversify energy generation.

Related Article

During question time on Tuesday, Premier Chris Minns attempted to juxtapose his party’s record on renewables against the Coalition, accusing the Liberal Party of scrubbing their previously wholesale commitment to clean energy investment “from the history books”.

“The largest, the largest contributor Mr Speaker, is renewable energy investment, all of which would be put in danger with the election of the Liberal-National-One Nation government in NSW,” he said.

“We’ve got two of the three of those parties resolutely against it, and the third one tottering right on the edge, Mr Speaker.”

Committee for Sydney chief executive Eamon Waterford said:
“Our research shows Sydney could produce up to 70 per cent of its own power – taking pressure off the regions which have been doing much of the heavy lifting to date.

“Urban renewable energy has been the quiet giant of renewables, and Sydney has more rooftop solar than any other city in the world, making this an enormous opportunity to reduce energy bills for households and businesses.”

Start the day with a summary of the day’s most important and interesting stories, analysis and insights. Sign up for our Morning Edition newsletter.

Save

You have reached your maximum number of saved items.

Remove items from your saved list to add more.

Max Maddison is a state political reporter at The Sydney Morning Herald. From our partners

Save You have reached your maximum number of saved items.
