\u201cIt\u2019s not harmless fun, it\u2019s dangerous and kids are at extreme risk when they use it,\u201d cyber safety expert Susan McLean said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is just so awful for young people, who are struggling with their self-esteem as it is, to be on a platform like this, just to see where they might come in a ranking scale.\u201d<\/p>\n
The site has gained popularity after major streaming personalities including xQc, Jason TheWeen and IShowSpeed shared their experiences with millions of followers.<\/p>\n
The website\u2019s name has also attracted a younger audience as it\u2019s a play on the name of controversial roulette-style chatting platform Omegele, which was officially shut down in November 2023.<\/p>\n
According to the eSafety commissioner, Omegele was \u201cbeing used by paedophiles to groom and abuse children\u201d, with the website revealing there were \u201cno measures in place to prevent children communicating with adult users they did not know\u201d.<\/p>\n
As of June 10, the website has been blocked in Australia, with the creators of Omoggle citing our social media ban for under 16s as the reason.<\/p>\n
But with the rise of Omoggle, McLean says these types of websites are like a \u201cwhack-a-mole; whack one down, one pops up\u201d.<\/p>\n
The term \u201cmog\u201d or \u201cmogging\u201d comes from internet culture and refers to the \u201cact of looking or acting better than another person\u201d, according to Urban Dictionary.<\/p>\n
It was popularised by the \u201clooksmaxxing\u201d<\/a> movement, which involves predominantly young males preaching physical beauty over everything else.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you have an online presence, whether you\u2019re a streamer or a YouTuber, you actually, in my mind, have a legal and moral and ethical responsibility to ensure the people you are engaging with are as safe as possible,\u201d McLean said.<\/p>\n \u201cKids are going to follow what you do. They are going to want to be where you are.<\/p>\n \u201cMost of them couldn\u2019t care less. They are solely about likes and streams and making money monetising their content.\u201d<\/p>\n How dangerous is the website?<\/p>\n We tried the website for ourselves to see how dangerous it could really be for young people.<\/p>\n While the site asks users to confirm whether they\u2019re over or under 18, there is no legitimate verification system in place.<\/p>\n One click, and it automatically takes you inside the over 18 \u201carena\u201d.<\/p>\n Testing the platform for about 20 minutes revealed numerous people clearly younger than 18, some even in school uniforms.<\/p>\n One user, who looked and sounded very young inappropriately asked, \u201ccan I eat your p****?\u201d.<\/p>\n The website only allows users to compete with a stranger for less than 20 seconds, easily sifting through multiple players in a short period of time.<\/p>\n McLean says because no one \u201cowns the internet\u201d, platforms can get away with being misused.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat the platforms will say when they\u2019re called out is, \u2018I\u2019ve created a platform for fun. I\u2019ve created it for people to connect with random strangers to have a chat\u2019,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cUnless the platform itself is breaking the law of the country it\u2019s operating in, then there\u2019s nothing anyone can do.<\/p>\n \u201cIf [the website] is simply dangerous and dodgy, well, unfortunately we\u2019re stuck with it.\u201d<\/p>\n An eSafety spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au that roulette-style apps randomly pairing strangers, particularly those popular with children, \u201cpose significant online safety risks and have been used by child sexual abuse offenders to groom Australian children\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cESafety is concerned about the risks posed by randomised video chat platforms like Omoggle and is monitoring the service\u2019s compliance with the Online Safety Act\u2019s codes and standards,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n Despite the social media ban rollout in Australia earlier this year, McLean says kids are still finding ways around restrictions on certain platforms.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve seen with social media platforms that these products that verify age through facial scanning are pretty flawed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cIf kids want to find a way around something, they will.\u201d<\/p>\n The emergence of Omoggle highlights the ongoing challenge facing parents and regulators, with experts warning that banning individual platforms creates a false sense of security when countless other problematic sites exist.<\/p>\n \u201cWe need to educate young people around tech use, risk and danger, and we need to educate parents to make sure they\u2019re actually parenting in the digital space,\u201d McLean said.<\/p>\n \u201cAll we can do is raise awareness that these platforms exist and make sure parents are aware.\u201d<\/p>\n![\"The](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/b7ba582db126ffa13e8e6c72fcc18d7df2d9c977.png\")
