{"id":765482,"date":"2026-06-28T09:56:30","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T09:56:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/765482\/"},"modified":"2026-06-28T09:56:30","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T09:56:30","slug":"its-just-too-high-new-south-wales-premier-chris-minns-renews-calls-for-common-sense-cut-to-tobacco-excise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/765482\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;It&#8217;s just too high&#8217;: New South Wales Premier Chris Minns renews calls for &#8216;common sense&#8217; cut to tobacco excise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has continued to break ranks with federal Labor in calling for a &#8220;common sense&#8221; cut to the tobacco excise.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Minns doubled down on Sunday to insist the tobacco excise was to blame for organised crime\u2019s involvement in the explosion of illegal cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/politics\/need-a-rethink-nsw-premier-chris-minns-agrees-with-pauline-hanson-in-cutting-the-tobacco-excise-to-address-black-market\/news-story\/85555be4f49bcb90b45d09ab9d0b7f80\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"85555be4f49bcb90b45d09ab9d0b7f80\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">Mr Minns joined One Nation leader Pauline Hanson&#8217;s call to cut the federal tobacco excise<\/a> and agued the levy was \u201cactually creating a black market for cigarettes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Bureau of Statistics data released this month found that nicotine consumption increased by almost 40 per cent between 2017 and 2025, despite population growth of only 14 per cent over the same period.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Premier Minns told Sky News Sunday Agenda that he could walk down the street in \u201cany suburb in Sydney\u201d and see discarded packets of illegal cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can walk down the street in any suburb in Sydney and see packets, discarded packets of cigarettes &#8211; I won&#8217;t go through the names of the brands &#8211; but they&#8217;re not part of the legal tobacco marketplace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMainly because organised crime&#8217;s involvement in illicit tobacco has exploded at the same time as the price of the legal product has massively grown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it&#8217;s common sense to put the two things together and realise that these people have entered a black market to supply a good that&#8217;s otherwise legal for a far cheaper price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the abundance in illicit tobacco products, Mr Minns remained optimistic that lawmakers and law enforcement were \u201cdoing a good job\u201d in shutting down illegal tobacconists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve closed down 200 in the last couple of weeks. We closed 200 more down in a few weeks before that and we&#8217;ll probably closed down another 200 in the next month or so,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it won&#8217;t stop, and the reason it won&#8217;t stop is because legal tobacco is so expensive that the illegal product is too tempting for these crooks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we could throw enormous amounts of resources at tackling organised crime, or we could put that money to better use somewhere else in the budget and have a common sense approach to this excise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my view, it&#8217;s just too high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Minns said the excise was originally introduced to reduce tobacco consumption in the community, but the \u201cexact opposite thing is happening\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/085253b59a45b9407fe752bb9ffc50fb.jpeg\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"\u2018Out of control\u2019: Melbourne resembles the \u2018prohibition days\u2019 with gangsters, alcohol and drugs\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s cheaper than ever and more people are using it than ever,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite everybody&#8217;s best intentions, there&#8217;s got to be an understanding that this isn&#8217;t working.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a federal government responsibility, but from my point-of-view, understandably, people in New South Wales are saying, \u2018what are you doing about high streets? What are you about deploying resources to combat illegal tobacco?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re putting money into it.
