I think we understood why and attacked things pretty differently for this weekend and today in particular, and I think the result is kind of the evidence of that work.”

The Australian was philosophical about missing the podium, with Mercedes and Red Bull operating on another level in Austria.

“It was a bit of a surprise we were able to beat Ferrari,” Piastri said. “It wasn’t by much, and I think strategy probably helped us out today. The pace was a little bit stronger than them, but clearly not strong enough to go and get Mercedes, and obviously with Verstappen being a lot quicker than we expected, so that’s where we are.

“When you don’t get a trophy at the end, you always wish there was a bit more, but that was the absolute most we could have done.”

Oscar Piastri leads Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari through a kerb at the Red Bull Ring on his way to fourth, the lead McLaren in Austria. Image: GettyImages

Ferrari surprise opens upgrade window

Piastri admitted Ferrari’s relative struggle in Austria, just a fortnight after a strong showing in Spain, had caught him off guard.

“After Barcelona I thought they would be really strong, but that clearly wasn’t the case here,” he said. “I think that’s good news for us in some ways, because we obviously haven’t brought many upgrades. They had a big upgrade in Barcelona, so we just need to try and get some of our own upgrades in the car.”

McLaren’s biggest target is straight-line speed. Almost half of Piastri’s deficit in qualifying came down the straights, where the MCL39 lacks pace against the Mercedes and the upgraded Red Bull.

“On the ratios we have a pretty good idea. I don’t know exactly where it stacks up this weekend, but that’s a very small piece of the puzzle,” he explained.

“The engines are the same, maybe there’s some things in deployment. We think there’s definitely something in drag. So we’re working with everyone, firstly on ourselves trying to get some drag off the car, but also with HPP to try and squeeze some more out of the engine and the deployment as well.”

McLaren is supplied with Mercedes power units by High Performance Powertrains (HPP), the same engine arm that supplies the works Mercedes team that beat Piastri to the podium in Austria.

Heat, slipstream and a new style of overtaking

Despite track temperatures climbing during a hot Austrian afternoon, Piastri said the race had been comfortable physically.

“It was hot, don’t get me wrong, but compared to some of the races like Singapore or that year in Qatar, today was pretty easy,” he said.

The Australian was also asked about the reduced impact of the overtake button at a circuit that used to favour DRS-led passing under the old regulations.

“From where I was sat it wasn’t massively different. I managed to get past Charles twice with the same kind of difficulty as DRS,” Piastri said.

“Being able to follow a bit closer was probably a little bit easier today. But here in the past DRS was worth a lot, whereas now overtake mode is not really worth that much here. The slipstream is a lot, so if you’ve got a bit of tyre difference, which is what I had with Charles, then you could make things happen. But if you didn’t have that then it was tough.”

Recent Storiesarray (
0 =>
WP_Term::__set_state(array(
‘term_id’ => 37,
‘name’ => ‘F1’,
‘slug’ => ‘f1’,
‘term_group’ => 0,
‘term_taxonomy_id’ => 37,
‘taxonomy’ => ‘category’,
‘description’ => ‘An Introduction to Formula One (F1)
Formula One, or F1, is the highest class of single-seater auto racing, governed by the Fédération Internationale de l\\’Automobile (FIA) and is owned by Liberty Media.
