A South Australian couple who spent $250,000 on fertility treatments say the government’s IVF rebate will make a “huge difference” for people trying to conceive.<\/p>\n

Chloe Bradley welcomed her first child Willow three years ago and is due to give birth to her second child, also conceived through IVF, this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking at a government press conference on Tuesday, Ms Bradley said the couple had struggled with fertility issues in the past six years.<\/p>\n

“We’ve had six miscarriages, three egg retrievals and multiple embryo transfers since then,” the mother said.<\/p>\n

“And had lots of obstacles happened along the way including the loss of an ovary, fallopian tube, appendix \u2014 [it] hasn’t been smooth-sailing.”<\/p>\n

She and her husband Tom estimated the total was $250,000, forcing her family to “make many sacrifices”.<\/p>\n

“We’ve had to go to Sydney as well for a reproductive immunologist because there’s no-one in Adelaide, and that treatment is very expensive and that’s not covered by Medicare or anything,” she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Ultimately we had to decide \u2014 do we get a mortgage or continue pursuing a family?”<\/p>\n

Ms Bradley said she would have been eligible for a government rebate to help cover out-of-pocket fertility treatment costs.<\/p>\n

SA Premier Peter Malinauskas said the government had committed $18.5 million over four years to the scheme, pledged before the March election<\/a>, which will officially start on July 1.<\/p>\n

Eligible women and families will be able to access $4,000 \u2014 $2,000 per cycle for two IVF cycles \u2014 along with a $250 rebate for pre-IVF fertility testing.<\/p>\n

“We’ll become the first state in the nation to be able to offer financial support for women and families going through IVF treatment, not just once but twice,” Mr Malinauskas said.<\/p>\n

“Our scheme will be more accessible, more generous than any other scheme like it anywhere in the country.”<\/p>\n

He said the rebate would be available to South Australian families, including solo parents, earning $180,000 or less.<\/p>\n

“This is about making sure that any woman who wants the opportunity to raise a child to be able to not be locked out of it simply because they can’t choose IVF,” he said.<\/p>\n
