Sunriver Resort<\/a>, a hidden gem boasting three outstanding championship courses and one of the coolest par-3 layouts I\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\nThink of Sunriver as a luxuriously rustic, family-style retreat packed with both warm and cold-weather activities. Beyond the golf, the property features a plethora of restaurants, a bustling shopping and restaurant complex, and a spa that just wrapped up a $4 million renovation. I visited last week for a few days specifically to test out the courses, and the experience did not disappoint.<\/p>\n
Far and away, the 7,683-yard Crosswater is the marquee course here. Don\u2019t be intimidated by the distance \u2013 you\u2019re at a 4,200-foot altitude in Sunriver. So you\u2019ll hit the golf ball longer on all of the courses. And standing on the very first tee box here, I was struck by the incredible views\u2014and then the scenery somehow got better on the next hole, and the next. My playing partners noticed the same thing; the entire round felt like a continuous visual crescendo. True to its name, it seems like many holes include a river crossing. Water comes into play frequently, demanding precise shot placement. But the course throws you a bone with massive greens and generous fairway landing areas. Every single blade of grass was in flawless, pristine condition. Scoring well here isn’t overly difficult if you keep your ball in the short grass, but as our starter warned us, there is plenty of trouble waiting to hand out double bogeys to anyone spraying it sideways. It was an absolute joy rolling putts on greens that broke exactly how they looked. While Crosswater is pricey, it\u2019s worth every penny. Like all the courses on the property, it\u2019s flat and incredibly walkable.<\/p>\n
Located right behind the main lodge, the 7,012-yard Meadows is a former host of a PGA Tour Champions event. Even though all of Sunriver sits at about 4,300 feet of elevation, the altitude-induced distance boost felt most noticeable on this track. The conditioning was excellent, and the layout offers fantastic variety, winding along the river and pressing up against a local airport. Wildlife is everywhere\u2014our group ran into several deer during the round. Meadows is also slated to host the 2027 US Adaptive Open. In preparation, the resort is softening the bunkers to make them shallower and more accessible. It will be slightly less penal and more scoreable by next year, which many golfers will welcome, as a few of these holes are genuinely challenging. Overall, it was a relaxing, highly enjoyable round that offers a fair test for every skill level.<\/p>\n

If you are traveling with family or players who aren\u2019t quite as seasoned but still want a full-length layout, the 6,947-yard Woodlands is your play. Offering stunning views of snowcapped mountains in the distance, this is a relatively flat, flowing course with plenty of birdie opportunities. The greens are large, the fairways are wide, and the resort recently cleared out about 200 trees to enhance overall playability. The abundant wildlife keeps things entertaining for the whole group, and during our round, the course played incredibly fast.<\/p>\n
The sensational Caldera Links par-3 course<\/p>\n

Finally, the Caldera Links short course is one of the prettiest par-3 layouts I\u2019ve ever laid eyes on. It features large greens, generous fairways, and tall heather populating the rough. Every hole plays right around 100 yards, meaning experienced players only need to bring a putter and a couple of wedges. It\u2019s a blast for everyone from scratch golfers to kids \u2013 I even watched a toddler effortlessly splash a ball out of a bunker. You can play all nine holes in about an hour. Afterward, make sure to hit the patio restaurant on the dock. It offers some of the best food on the property alongside spectacular lake views.<\/p>\n
If you\u2019re lucky enough to stay at the main lodge, expect rooms that feel like upscale, ultra-cozy log cabins, replete with fireplaces, espresso machines, and plush beds. There are also plenty of other lodging configurations across the vast property, including full-sized cottages. On the culinary front, I managed to eat at five different restaurants during my stay. The salmon, which I ordered at three separate spots, was consistently excellent. I also sampled great steaks, hamburgers, tomato basil soup, and fresh salads. But whatever you do, don\u2019t skip the mason jar brownie sundae. Because golf took up most of my time on this quick journey, the only other activity I managed to squeeze in was a relaxing five-mile bike ride. The paved trail system loops around the property and is flat, peaceful, and surrounded by memorable scenery.<\/p>\n
Sunriver is one of those rare, expansive resorts where you actually need a map to get around \u2013 and that’s part of the charm. Everywhere you look, you’re treated to towering trees, lakes, rivers, and mountain backdrops.
