{"id":769974,"date":"2026-06-30T13:42:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T13:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/769974\/"},"modified":"2026-06-30T13:42:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T13:42:09","slug":"black-knight-rugby-completes-takeover-of-exeter-rugby-group-ltd-exeter-chiefs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/769974\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Knight Rugby completes takeover of Exeter Rugby Group Ltd | Exeter Chiefs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:0a5f918ed3b6\">Exeter Chiefs heralded a new dawn today as the club confirmed its sale to Black Knight Rugby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:060a27e2d7d4\">A new subsidiary of Cannae Holdings, Inc., Black Knight Rugby, has purchased 100% of the shares of Exeter Rugby Group Ltd following a vote by Exeter\u2019s members to permit the sale of the club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:1f8b527ddaa0\">Under Black Knight, Tony Rowe CBE will continue as CEO of the club to maintain continuity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:16b31eec6cb3\">Rowe said: \u201cIf you had to choose an investor in the world of sport, you could not choose better than Black Knight. I am absolutely over the moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:2bdaeb499c46\">The deal ends Rowe\u2019s 25-year financial support of the club, which has seen the former telecoms business owner help Exeter Chiefs survive a \u00a325 million debt accrued following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:9aa488bebed0\">Rowe will be part of a new three-person executive board alongside Cannae Holdings, Inc.\u2019s vice chairman William P Foley, II and CEO Ryan Caswell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:99e48c4847b3\">Rowe added: \u201cI look forward to working with Black Knight Rugby to support the club. Black Knight\u2019s partnership from both a capital and operation perspective will allow Exeter Chiefs to move into the franchise era with ease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:17e14743bd5e\">\u201cAlthough I feel privileged to have led this club for the last 25 years, the financial burden was becoming too much for me and my family. With Black Knight, we can look forward to a positive future, building on what we have already achieved to keep pushing for success on and off the pitch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:fc815e45d679\">Oakwell Sports Advisory was instrumental in finding investors for the club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:9f7335ad4ebd\">Cannae Holdings, Inc. has invested in several football clubs across the world, including the Premier League\u2019s AFC Bournemouth who finished in a record sixth place last season, as well as FC Lorient of France\u2019s Ligue 1 and Moreirense FC of Portugal\u2019s Primeira Liga.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:79b70a3ea633\">Foley commented: \u201cExeter is the type of asset we have been seeking as we transform Cannae into a focused portfolio of sports and entertainment businesses. We have a proven track record of building successful sports and entertainment brands, like Black Knight Football\u2019s network of clubs, and we intend to bring that same approach to Exeter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:c49d42245bda\">\u201cWe are excited to partner with Tony, the management team and the community to build on the success of the club and drive future results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:44a2fdb6418f\">Caswell (below right), who visited Sandy Park two months ago, said: \u201cThe acquisition of Exeter is the next example of Cannae executing on the strategic priorities outlined by our board. Exeter adds another attractive sports asset to our portfolio at a compelling entry price with upside at both the club and the league level, that can be enhanced through Cannae\u2019s experience operating sports assets. We look forward to working with the Exeter team, its sponsors and supporters to further the club\u2019s momentums both on and off the pitch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:d39e9c335eee\">This acquisition has also been welcomed by England\u2019s two main rugby sporting bodies, PREM Rugby and the RFU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:ea635b958a27\">Simon Massie-Taylor, CEO of PREM Rugby, said: \u201cWe are delighted to welcome Black Knight Rugby to the Gallagher PREM as our first American club investors in the competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyRG mb-2\" data-sanity-edit-target=\"block:12387720617c\">\u201cAs proven owners in Premier League football with Bournemouth and in the NHL with the Vegas Golden Knights, Black Knight understands elite sport and what it takes to build a high-performance environment on and off the pitch.
