(Image credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech)<a id=\"elk-1b3f406d-21d0-47c0-b8cb-4118e6bd378a\"\/>Normalizing the idea<a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-5b18ca23-ffd8-4d06-b94f-3a3eab4c98a4-0\">As a first-of-its-kind gathering of experts, the Humans to Titan Summit 2026 was invigorating, taking seriously the prospect of one day <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/saturn\/should-saturns-huge-moon-titan-be-humanitys-next-destination-after-the-moon-and-mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/saturn\/should-saturns-huge-moon-titan-be-humanitys-next-destination-after-the-moon-and-mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/saturn\/should-saturns-huge-moon-titan-be-humanitys-next-destination-after-the-moon-and-mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sending humans to Titan<\/a>, said Amanda Hendrix, director of the Planetary Science Institute, which is headquartered in Tucson, Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>Hendrix is also president of the advocacy group Explore Titan and co-author of &#8220;Beyond Earth: Our Path to a New Home in the Planets&#8221; (Pantheon Books, 2016).<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone recognizes that the reality of this is a long way off,&#8221; Hendrix told Space.com, &#8220;but normalizing the idea \u200a\u200a\u2014 that Titan is actually a very reasonable destination for humans \u200a\u2014 is important.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Taking this goal seriously means that &#8220;we can have a next destination in our minds, after <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a>,&#8221; she added. &#8220;That keeps the momentum going.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-1494c0b8-ff27-475e-9614-a1653bdb5c19\"\/>Dense atmosphere<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-8e171421-df48-473a-abed-e112390d2e07\">The assembly of experts explored an array of Titan topics, from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25844-spacesuit-evolution-space-tech-photos.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25844-spacesuit-evolution-space-tech-photos.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25844-spacesuit-evolution-space-tech-photos.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spacesuits<\/a> and modes of transportation, habitat designs and airlock concepts to light levels and possible encounters with monsoons and floods on the frigid, exotic moon, which has a weather system based on hydrocarbons rather than water.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, making use of Titan as a hub for launching sample-return missions to other moons within the Saturn system, like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20543-enceladus-saturn-s-tiny-shiny-moon.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20543-enceladus-saturn-s-tiny-shiny-moon.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20543-enceladus-saturn-s-tiny-shiny-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Enceladus<\/a>, was viewed as a big plus.<\/p>\n<p>So too was utilizing the moon&#8217;s rich bounty of resources \u2014 like methane, nitrogen and oxygen \u2014 to fuel expansive, far-deeper exploration beyond Titan itself.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got a lot of planning to do,&#8221; said Hendrix, &#8220;but we have time!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A top priority is figuring out how to either shorten the trip time to Titan or accommodate it and mitigate the negative effects on astronauts, Hendrix said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The top reason in my mind that Titan is such a good spot for humans is the dense atmosphere,&#8221; Hendrix said. (Image credit: Explore Titan)<a id=\"elk-8629646b-2ea3-44e0-92be-6b5095ab6a04\"\/>Precursor missions<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9df1becd-f1ac-4485-bc86-2eb8a09dc8fd\">Appreciation of what human visitors will face on the moon was boosted by the European Space Agency&#8217;s robotic <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16130-titan-landing-saturn-moon-huygens-pictures.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16130-titan-landing-saturn-moon-huygens-pictures.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16130-titan-landing-saturn-moon-huygens-pictures.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Huygens probe<\/a>, which touched down on Titan on Jan. 14, 2005 as part of the NASA-ESA <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17754-cassini-huygens.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17754-cassini-huygens.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17754-cassini-huygens.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cassini-Huygens mission<\/a> to Saturn.<\/p>\n<p>Next up for setting down on Titan is NASA&#8217;s nuclear-powered <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/nasa-begins-building-nuclear-powered-dragonfly-drone-for-2028-launch-to-saturn-moon-titan\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/nasa-begins-building-nuclear-powered-dragonfly-drone-for-2028-launch-to-saturn-moon-titan\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/nasa-begins-building-nuclear-powered-dragonfly-drone-for-2028-launch-to-saturn-moon-titan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dragonfly<\/a>, now projected to launch no earlier than 2028 for a six-year voyage to the faraway moon.<\/p>\n<p>During its over three-year surface mission, Dragonfly&#8217;s rotors will carry it for miles across Titan&#8217;s surface, auto-piloting its way to a variety of areas. The summit was held at SwRI&#8217;s Solar System Science &amp; Exploration Division facilities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone recognized that sending humans to Titan is extraordinarily ambitious. But history shows that the greatest achievements in exploration begin when people are willing to pursue goals that seem beyond reach,&#8221; said Rafkin. Sharing with Space.com his own personal thoughts, he said the summit marked &#8220;the beginning of a long-term effort to imagine and ultimately achieve something transformative.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Titan is one of the most compelling worlds in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a>, Rafkin said; it&#8217;s a place with rivers, lakes, weather, dunes and complex chemistry unlike anywhere else we know of. (Image credit: Dijoux and Lee)<a id=\"elk-9f3e1a3c-85b3-49be-a9c0-e58104f1d23b\"\/>&#8216;Not a question of physics&#8217;<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-1bd9ae36-6ca2-4c47-b59f-212bd18bd794\">Rafkin said that targeting Titan will also accelerate technologies needed not only for exploring that moon but for voyaging throughout the solar system.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Human exploration of Titan is not a question of physics,&#8221; said Rafkin. &#8220;It is a question of time, technology, and commitment. We understand most of the major challenges. The challenge is immense, but it is achievable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rafkin said that the summit was not about planning a mission.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was about starting a movement. If space exploration has taught us anything, it is that ambitious goals accelerate innovation in ways we cannot fully predict.
