\u201cProject Hail Mary<\/a>,\u201d the film adaptation of Andy Weir\u2019s best-selling novel, will be available to stream on Prime Video<\/a> starting July 3. The film is also streaming on MGM+, where it arrived last month.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Creative duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, whose previous films include \u201cThe Lego Movie\u201d and \u201cSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,\u201d directed the film with a script from Drew Goddard. This marks Goddard\u2019s second Weir adaptation, having worked on the 2015 film adaptation of \u201cThe Martian.\u201d When asked about working with the directorial pair<\/a>, Goddard stated that they \u201cthrive in finding the humanity inside of these crazy characters,\u201d something this film required.<\/p>\n

The sci-fi thriller follows Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, as he embarks on a near-impossible space mission with one simple goal: saving the world. Gosling\u2019s co-stars include Sandra H\u00fcller as Eva Stratt and puppeteer James Ortiz as Rocky, the adorable alien that accompanies Grace on his outer space adventure.<\/p>\n

\u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d has grossed $680 million globally after originally racking up $80.5 million in its March box office launch, marking Amazon Studios\u2019 biggest opening, previously set by \u201cCreed III.\u201d It became the largest debut of the year, until it was dethroned by Universal\u2019s \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Less than a month after the film\u2019s release, NASA launched its own mission into space with Artemis II. The goal, according to NASA<\/a>, is to test how the spacecraft operates in deep space, with the bonus that this marks the furthest a crew has ever traveled from Earth, breaking the previous record set by the Apollo 13 mission. Ahead of lift-off, the four-person crew got to watch \u201cProject Hail Mary,\u201d and Gosling later sent the crew best wishes<\/a> via video.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Den of Geek<\/a>, Andy Weir stated that he \u201cmight write a sequel someday,\u201d but it\u2019s not something he\u2019s currently working on. He does, however, have ideas for an expanded storyline, but nothing \u201cthat\u2019s good enough to run with yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
