Thursday\u2019s jobs report will offer some key clues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr142a1b003w29nz8jtjcibs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For much of the past 18 months, the labor market has remained largely frozen.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55j00033j6sepsz4b9g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rampant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/26\/economy\/trump-tariffs-trade-war-jobs-economy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">uncertainty<\/a>, a lasting hangover from pandemic-era <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/22\/tech\/big-tech-pandemic-hiring-layoffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">overhiring<\/a>, the rise of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/11\/business\/ai-jobs-work\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI<\/a>, and a cocktail of other economic concerns \u2013 persistently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/12\/politics\/cost-of-living-us-financial-problem-vis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high inflation<\/a>, elevated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/business\/live-news\/federal-reserve-interest-rate-01-28-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interest rates<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/07\/economy\/us-jobs-report-april-preview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shrinking labor force<\/a> \u2013 stifled businesses\u2019 expansion plans and put hiring on ice.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55j00043j6siptf74sv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But for the past few months, it\u2019s been looking like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/05\/economy\/us-jobs-may-final\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a thaw is underway<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55j00053j6sdnvu9j01@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            US employment growth has surpassed expectations, adding an average of 188,000 jobs per month since March.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55j00063j6sc500rvry@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s a stark turnaround from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/09\/economy\/us-jobs-report-final-december\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last year<\/a>, when monthly gains averaged fewer than 10,000 jobs (or, roughly one-twentieth of what we\u2019re seeing now); and it comes across all the more impressive considering the backdrop of a volatile war in the Middle East and a massive oil shock that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/11\/business\/high-inflation-rate-problem\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heated up inflation<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55j00073j6sqq6jhf8s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It seems the labor market may have stabilized, and June\u2019s jobs report \u2013 which is set to be released on Thursday, one day early, due to the July 4 holiday \u2013 could provide some important clues as to how much it\u2019s actually heating back up \u2013 and not just by creating jobs but by creating better jobs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55j00083j6s7t3t571b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here are a few metrics to key in on when the latest data drops:\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Will job gains stay strong and will unemployment fall?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55l000a3j6ssun2zuld@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It seems almost pedestrian to lead with, \u201chey, look at the total payroll growth and the unemployment rate\u201d as a gauge on the labor market\u2019s health. But these metrics are the headliners for a reason. They provide a nice, quick snapshot of economic conditions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55l000b3j6saisr9vjv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In May, the economy added an estimated 172,000 jobs while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.3% for the third month in a row.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55l000c3j6s92asmhkm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            FactSet\u2019s consensus estimates have June\u2019s job gains at 100,000 and the jobless rate extending its 4.3% streak by another month. However, economists\u2019 individual estimates vary widely: Some are expecting job growth close to 200,000 while others project a tepid total of 35,000 or under.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55l000d3j6s4wljd00k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Joe Brusuelas, RSM US\u2019 senior economist, is in the first camp. He\u2019s expecting 180,000 jobs added and for the unemployment rate to dip to 4.2% \u2013 likely indicating an improvement of economic health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2bm52y001m3j6sxx8nog7h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Three factors are impacting that outlook: One, a pickup in hiring in goods-producing and construction businesses tied to AI datacenter buildout and capital expenditures; two, sustained growth in healthcare jobs as the US population gets older; and three, a largely World Cup-driven lift in transportation and leisure and hospitality employment.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gettyimages-2280597089.jpg\" alt=\"Fans buy snacks and beverages at a concession stand during the 2026 World Cup football match between USA and Paraguay at the Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California, on June 12, 2026.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1334\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55l000f3j6snwocloh1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even if there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/16\/business\/kansas-city-world-cup-economy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Cup boost<\/a> (that would drop off come July or August), Brusuelas said he believes the labor market has pivoted toward acceleration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55l000g3j6s2g3w2a4g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAnything above 50 (thousand jobs added), I\u2019m very happy about,\u201d he told CNN in an interview.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55m000i3j6sy61w6m2w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Workers\u2019 pay gains have slowed from their pandemic hiring frenzy highs and are running at an annual rate of 3.4%, roughly what was seen in the summer of 2019.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55m000j3j6sutvs7say@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The problem now is that prices are rising at more than double the rate then, and inflation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/10\/economy\/us-cpi-consumer-inflation-may\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at 4.2%<\/a>) is well outpacing wage growth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55m000k3j6s8n9sdkh2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWage growth does not turn around quickly, but if we continue to see strong employment growth, there should be some uptick in the rate of wage growth,\u201d Dean Baker, economist and co-founder of the Center for Economic and Policy Research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55m000l3j6snziga2qw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The expectations are that pay gains shouldn\u2019t fall further behind on their own in June. FactSet estimates show a pickup to 3.5%, while separate data released Wednesday by payroll giant ADP indicated that the median pay gain for \u201cjob-stayers\u201d held at 4.4%, while job-changers accelerated to 6.6% from 6.5% in May.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55m000m3j6smzdvh9we@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAll told, this is a good sign of stability,\u201d Nela Richardson, ADP\u2019s chief economist, told reporters in a call on Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55n000o3j6s2fhxh6r5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The healthcare industry has been the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/14\/economy\/healthcare-jobs-labor-market\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">labor market stalwart<\/a>, powering the bulk of employment gains, and in the process, highlighting the sheer power of shifting demographics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55n000p3j6skcqh1x6z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In recent months, other sectors have started to bounce back: In May, as in April and March, more industries were adding jobs than losing them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2bhay0001f3j6sjyr72knh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf (June) is a bad report, what one would expect is a reversion to where the pickup in hiring was almost exclusively driven by [healthcare] and flat to negative elsewhere,\u201d Brusuelas said. \u201cThat would suggest that we just saw a temporary, three-month mirage in hiring.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2bjb23001h3j6sywyn2br7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            ADP\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/adpemploymentreport.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">June employment report<\/a> released Wednesday showed a slowing in employment growth at US private-sector firms to 98,000 from 122,000 the month before. It also showed a return to the over-concentration in healthcare versus more broad-based hiring in May.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2bu81t00003j6shd93i068@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            ADP\u2019s Richardson said she had been \u201creally excited by the May report, because we got contributions from almost every industry.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gettyimages-2275877536.jpg\" alt=\"Job seekers attend a small-business summit and job fair hosted by the Chicago Department of Aviation on May 12, 2026, in Chicago.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1331\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2bw0h000043j6sh2xqyhe7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It seemed as if this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/09\/economy\/us-jolts-job-openings-october-september\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201clow-hire, low-fire\u201d labor market<\/a> was finally becoming more dynamic, she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2bwlix00063j6se6nlbgdp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe didn\u2019t get that [in June], but what we got was a lot of stability,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd maybe given everything \u2013 all the crosswinds, and AI effects, and demographic effects, and global effects that could be impacting things \u2013 we should take some stability as we end the first half of the year.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2aq55n000s3j6shciaz9oi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last year\u2019s employment growth was some of the weakest on record, and two demographic groups were the hardest hit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/04\/business\/black-unemployment-jobs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black Americans<\/a> and younger Americans, noted Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2cd7kr000p3j6s9b5w7rya@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The unemployment rate of workers between 16 and 24 years old improved in May (9.4%) from last summer (hovered between 10% and 10.6%). Black workers\u2019 unemployment dropped to 6.6% from 7.3%.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gettyimages-2284068737.jpg\" alt=\"Job seekers meet with recruiters during the HIRE360 Diversity Hiring Expo &amp; Mega Career Expo at the Carson Event Center on June 30, 2026, in Carson, California.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1339\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2cdaqi000r3j6s43wknyzy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The demographic data in the jobs report is notoriously choppy and volatile; however, if those trends persist, it could be an indicator of improvement in the labor market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2c11yj000f3j6sygxjuqro@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHistorically those groups have been canaries in the coal mine for the labor market: They tend to be laid off first and hired last,\u201d she said. \u201cThere are a lot of reasons for that, some of which include historic discrimination, but I think when you\u2019re really trying to gauge how healthy is the labor market, when you see the Black unemployment rate coming down, you know that the improvement is real.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Are more people finding jobs \u2013 and the ones they want?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2ci7eq001g3j6sypz0fevl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The May jobs report showed that workers employed part-time for economic reasons fell by nearly 140,000. Additionally, there was a decline in the number of workers unemployed for five weeks or fewer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2cpc16001k3j6sy4jtc21w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The trajectory of both point to faster absorption of job seekers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/30\/economy\/us-jolts-job-openings-layoffs-may\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as more jobs are opening up<\/a>, ZipRecruiter economist Nicole Bachaud noted at the time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2crz0h001o3j6srmkrs8xm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The one area of concern, she said: Long-term unemployment (27 weeks or more) rose by 155,000.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2cskfu001q3j6srr36lcj0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSuggesting employers are drawing disproportionately from the fresher end of the talent pool,\u201d she wrote at the time. \u201cWorkers who have been searching for months continue to face steeper headwinds and a more challenging job search than headlines suggest.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2h1ol800023b6rrymginxm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Bureau of Labor Statistics is set to release the jobs report for June at 8:30 a.m. ET on Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"For much of the past 18 months, the labor market has remained largely frozen.
