The axe swung just six weeks later.

Vasseur was re-signed on a deal running until the end of next season three weeks after Horner’s sacking.

The logic of a Ferrari move is suspect anyway given Horner’s stated intention to return to the sport in a position more powerful than just team principal.

Vasseur’s role is less powerful than Horner’s old job at Red Bull Racing. Whereas Horner was also chief executive, Vasseur works underneath Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna and executive chairman John Elkann, heir of the Italian Agnelli industrial dynasty.

“I would want to be a partner rather than just a hired hand,” the Englishman said earlier this year, but the prospect of the team principalship remit being widened for Horner is slim.

Ecclestone, however, declared that Italian icon Ferrari would benefit from more international input — notwithstanding Vasseur is a Frenchman with no prior association with F1’s most famous team.

“The trouble with Ferrari: I think there’s too many Italians involved explaining what to do and what not to do,” he said, per Crash.

“You just need really one person [to] do this or do that. It has veto power over the 24 per cent share until September, after which Otro will reportedly be free to resume negotiations with whomever party it chooses.

MORE FORMULA 1

DRIVER MARKET: F1’s biggest axe risk; Max reality check… and if Aussie can return

‘NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE’: What’s behind F1’s $311m chaos as volatile state of play explained

EXPLAINED: Where Max’s future stands after ‘big F1 step’, fresh McLaren talks twist

While Otro was negotiating with Mercedes, Horner became connected to Chinese automotive giant BYD, which is considering entering Formula 1 as its 12th team.

He has already held talks with company vice-president Stella Li, who said earlier this year she is in regular contact with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has long been a supporter of welcoming a Chinese team to the grid.

“We see with China, they said to me will you, or are you going to, add another 12th team as an expression of interest,” he said last month, per The Athletic.

“It’s not about adding a team, it’s about adding the right team. And the right team, we can see it from China.”

Returning to F1 with BYD could give Horner a chance to embellish his legacy by building a team from the ground up, but it would also set back his paddock comeback by several years given the time frame required to start a constructor from scratch.

The initial expression-of-interest process that eventually got Cadillac on the grid this year began in 2023. The FIA is yet to signal when it might open a new round of expressions of interest for prospective new teams.

Leclerc and Piastri clash in Austria! | 00:42

Alternatively, Aston Martin has periodically been rumoured to be in contact with Horner, including last year, shortly after he was sacked.

Horner was reportedly on a shortlist for the top job as late as last November before the team made the shock announcement that managing technical partner Adrian Newey would add the team principal role to his remit from this year.

Stroll reportedly subsequently told employees that Horner would “absolutely not” be joining the team.

However, the Daily Mail has reported this week that Stroll has approached Horner again about taking the top job.

Reports earlier this year suggested Newey would step down from the team principalship to focus on his duties as technical leader of the team.

Former Audi principal Jonathan Wheatley was connected to the role and was dismissed from the German marque after it became clear he had been talking to the rival squad. However, no announcement of his move has been forthcoming.

If Horner were to join in his place, it would mean Newey would be working underneath him as team principal for the second time, having done so from 2026 until officially leaving the business early last year.

Newey and Horner have a complicated relationship.

Rumours suggested their original contracts at Red Bull Racing were tied to one another, allowing one to quit if the other were forced out.

However, reports at the time of Newey’s decision to walk suggested he was motivated to quit partly because of dissatisfaction with Horner’s leadership as well as the negativity surrounding the team following the allegations of inappropriate workplace behaviour made against the boss in 2024.

Horner was cleared of wrongdoing by two separate internal investigations.

The BBC, however, reported that the two later mended their relationship and attended an Oasis concert together last year.

Joining forces at Aston Matin could yet be complicated, however, given Newey’s ascension to the top job is believed to be in part because his status as a shareholder led to an irreconcilable power imbalance with former team principal Andy Cowell.

Given Horner has said he wants a stake in the team, him joining as team boss and a shareholder would fundamentally alter the power dynamic at the struggling team again.

Former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone says Christian Horner’s reputation will put him in a “difficult position” as the…

[573
64,63,817,813,816,85
post-773808","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-formula-1","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-f1","tag-formula-1","tag-formula1","tag-sports
["GET
