(Supplied: Tasmanian government)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After backlash to its proposed Bell Bay facility, Firmus announced it would be holding drop-in sessions and webinars for the local community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We want to get together with the community and present and explain what we&#8217;re doing,&#8221; Firmus co-CEO Tim Rosenfield told 936 ABC Radio Hobart on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And then have direct feedback so we can accommodate the community&#8217;s concerns and they can make an informed decision for themselves about what we&#8217;re doing.&#8221;Loading&#8230;Community concerns &#8216;not creating much change&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Tasmanian government has backed <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.industry.gov.au\/publications\/expectations-data-centres-and-ai-infrastructure-developers\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the federal government&#8217;s expectations of data centres<\/a>, but the Greens want a moratorium on new data centres until state-specific regulation is put in place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Greens are pushing for large AI developments to be subject to parliamentary oversight and required to regularly report their energy and water consumption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tasmanian Greens technology spokesperson Tabatha Badger said the community felt left in the dark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They don&#8217;t have the answers, and they don&#8217;t have the confidence they are going to have a fair say in what the future of AI and data centres in their state looks like,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman leaning against a wall.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/e55e1fa61aaa5828511d7e924374199b.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tabatha Badger says the processes have not started to bring new renewable projects online before Firmus begins operating. (ABC News: Luke Bowden)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Cumbo also wants to see state governments regulate data centre developments, describing &#8220;an absence of strategic planning&#8221; across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Early communications that could shape where these things are located, how they&#8217;re designed, are being overlooked,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Cumbo said while nearby residents&#8217; concerns around things like noise from data centres could be framed as &#8220;nimbyism&#8221;, there were legitimate questions to be asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They also produce low-frequency vibrations, which you can&#8217;t hear, but can be quite damaging, particularly to the environment and to people,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It just hasn&#8217;t been researched enough.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A high-tech room.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1783028355_33_145a97825a4db1bd592f1f354e4b57e6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Firmus is also pursuing a venture in Singapore. (Supplied: Firmus)<\/p>\n<p>Questions remain around energy plans<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Amr Omar, who researches the sustainability of data centres&#8217; water and energy use at the University of New South Wales, urged AI companies to be up-front about their energy and water use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Part of my job is looking at all of these different data centres and their efficiency metrics and so on and so forth, but it&#8217;s not really clear to me how they report the numbers,&#8221; Dr Omar said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And there is no benchmark that I could compare them with in the sense of everyone having different methods to estimate their water use, their energy use.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tasmanian Energy Minister Nick Duigan has said Firmus would require more than 400 megawatts to power its three proposed sites, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-15\/firmus-ai-company-tasmania-biggest-power-user-three-sites\/106783142\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">which would make it the state&#8217;s biggest power user.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Three men stand over a small model of a building.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/adf49959360a04d755982b273fedcb68.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jeremy Rockliff says the Greens are scaremongering about Firmus.
