Ten years later, some players never stopped"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It&#8217;s a Wednesday night and at Brisbane&#8217;s South Bank, Pok\u00e9mon GO fans are gathering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It isn&#8217;t a big group \u2014 a far cry from when the game was released in 2016 and the green strip along the Brisbane River thrums with life as thousands of players gathered to catch, battle and trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The game took the world by storm, for a few weeks at least, before the inevitable drop-off as casual players left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But 10 years on these hardcore fans are still playing, and they say the game has changed their lives in unexpected ways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Owen Beck was just 13 years old when he started playing after hearing about it from a cousin.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A vest with the emblem reading Pokemon GO Community Ambassador 2024\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/9ad34a0e8744804ba763b48132981b8c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">There are 27 Pok\u00e9mon GO community ambassadors around Queensland. (ABC News: Stephen Clarke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I downloaded it, started playing it, got hooked, never stopped playing,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Fast-forward 10 years and Owen is a Pok\u00e9mon Go Community Ambassador, one of 27 in Queensland, who runs the weekly meet-ups at South Bank as well as a monthly community day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I attribute a lot of positive stuff in my life to Pok\u00e9mon GO,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s probably my biggest passion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man with glasses and dark hair smiles against a night time backdrop\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/9afeba9dae6b0a3d4c14438d8c176b13.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Owen Beck is a Pok\u00e9mon GO community ambassador. (ABC News: Stephen Clarke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A chronic migraine condition that used to leave him bed bound &#8220;for days or weeks at a time&#8221; has become more manageable since he started playing, Owen said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He attributes that to necessity to get out and walk while playing Pok\u00e9mon GO in order to level up Pok\u00e9mon, hatch eggs and earn other rewards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I walk like 15 to 20 kilometres a day,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In fact Owen has walked more than 32,500 kilometres since he first started playing in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That&#8217;s roughly the equivalent of walking from Brisbane to Perth and back, four times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He has also caught more than half a million Pok\u00e9mon, although he admits there are still &#8220;a few people&#8221; that have caught more than him.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A small pikachu toy attached to a backpack\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3044ce0975c1701cbbeb6c01570a0903.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Even non-Pok\u00e9mon fans can recognise a Pikachu. (ABC News: Stephen Clarke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Andrew Swan, 34, is a day-one player and still reminisces about the early days of the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen a lot of jokes about it but it just literally felt like a time of peace.
