(Reuters: Supplied\/Ron Beard\/NASA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Launched in 2004, Swift is sinking faster than ever because of recent solar storms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">If successful, the mission could pave the way for giving other satellites a second life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NASA is paying $US30 million ($43.5 million) for Katalyst to capture the telescope and boost its orbit so it can continue tracking some of the biggest explosions in the universe, like gamma ray bursts and exploding stars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">If all goes well, Swift could be back scanning the cosmos by September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Observations are currently on hold to preserve the telescope&#8217;s orbit as long as possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-29\/nasa-swift-telescope-rescue-mission-set-to-launch\/106854708\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA to bump telescope back into space<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">US space agency NASA is racing to save an aging telescope from falling back to Earth with a daring rescue mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NASA&#8217;s Hubble Space Telescope could be a candidate for a similar salvage operation in a few years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is also slipping in altitude because of increased atmospheric drag caused by the sun&#8217;s outbursts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 1.4-metric ton Swift currently is circling 360 kilometres above Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Katalyst aims to raise the telescope&#8217;s altitude by 240 kilometres, back to where it all began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Link&#8217;s thrusters will fire to boost Swift slowly, so there&#8217;s no heavy jostling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Without such a boost, it&#8217;s predicted to plunge to its demise in October.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A photo looking down on a small spacecraft in a round area, with two men dressed in white protective gear standing next to it.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/61e8af5e5ec60a49066c112afdd2ebd9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The SWIFT orbital boost effort is the first US mission of its kind<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 (AP: Supplied\/Sophia Roberts\/NASA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Bad weather and technical issues caused a series of last-minute launch delays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This is a high-risk, high-reward mission,&#8221; Katalyst Space CEO Ghonhee Lee said ahead of lift-off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The biggest danger was always we don&#8217;t launch anything and we let Swift burn up in the atmosphere.
