Vancouver Canucks development\u00a0coaches\u00a0Mike Komisarek and Mikael Samuelsson\u00a0sat down with Canucks Insider podcast host Chris Faber to\u00a0discuss the week of development camp.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The group got down to nuts and bolts\u00a0of the\u00a0ups and downs\u00a0of their hockey journeys,\u00a0talking about\u00a0adversity and challenges\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0overcome, resilience, and legacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The week was about educating the prospects and building relationships with the objective of having the players get comfortable and learn.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSammy and I, what\u00a0we’ve\u00a0tried to do is create an environment\u00a0that\u00a0these kids are not worried about being judged, that\u00a0they’re\u00a0not worried about making mistakes. It started with RJ from the opening meeting,\u201d\u00a0Komisarek said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou want to form bonds and then prioritize those relationships, not only with the players, but the players with the staff.\u00a0There’s\u00a0a massive support system for these guys.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The returning players are familiar with the framework and already have relationships to build on,\u00a0whereas\u00a0it can be a whirlwind for the new prospects.\u00a0Komisarek and Samuelsson\u00a0talked about the leadership\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0seen throughout camp, with some of the returning\u00a0prospects\u00a0taking\u00a0incoming prospects\u00a0under their wing,\u00a0and how they\u00a0want to build on\u00a0the\u00a0character\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0seen from the group.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTalent only takes you so far, and that’s like a head start, but character takes you a long way, and like every organization wants leaders, leaders are what we try to create here,” Samuelsson said. “For them to get a feel for what the management wants, and we get a feel for the players too, so it’s such a bonding experience, and we are in this together.”<\/p>\n
The players will take what they learned at development camp and head home or to their teams to train for the summer.\u00a0Komisarek and Samuelsson usually reach out to the players after\u00a0camp\u00a0and\u00a0touch\u00a0base about summer programs and training and will see a few of them at training camp in\u00a0September.\u00a0<\/p>\n
