Yet it was fellow left-handed batsman Bethell, a relative veteran at the age 22, who made the telling contribution as England went 1-0 up in a five-match series after Wednesday\u2019s washout in Durham.<\/p>\n
England were faltering at 51-3, chasing 191 for victory, when Bethell walked into bat but he responded with an expertly-paced 76 not out as the hosts beat the T20 world champions by four wickets.<\/p>\n
The match turned decisively in England\u2019s favour in the 17th over of their chase that went for 29 runs, with Bethell striking two free-hit sixes following back-foot no-balls from Ravi Bishnoi.<\/p>\n
The spinner\u2019s four wicketless overs cost an expensive 60 runs. Bethell hit five fours and five sixes in 46 balls faced as England won with an over to spare.<\/p>\n
He rated this innings above even his remarkable 154 in the Ashes finale in Sydney and his 105 in a T20 World Cup semi-final against India in March as it led to victory.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m very pleased,\u201d Bethell told reporters.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s nothing sweeter as a batter than walking off with a win, not out, shaking the boys\u2019 hands. There\u2019s a few scars against India so it\u2019s nice to get one up on them.\u201d <\/p>\n

Earlier, Sooryavanshi opened in front of a majority Indian crowd in Manchester, with the match being watched by a primetime television audience back home.<\/p>\n
Sooryavanshi forced his way into India\u2019s tour squad following stunning displays in the Indian Premier League, where he emerged as the leading batsman this season with 776 runs for the Rajasthan Royals.<\/p>\n
But he was left on the sidelines for India\u2019s shock 2-0 series loss to Ireland in Belfast and Wednesday\u2019s series opener.<\/p>\n
Sooryavasnhi didn\u2019t take long to make an impression in Manchester. He sent his fourth ball soaring over fine leg for six off Royals team-mate Jofra Archer, stooping down on to one knee before he played a modified sweep shot off England\u2019s fastest bowler.<\/p>\n
His seventh delivery also cleared the ropes, fellow debutant Josh Tongue seeing a good-length ball struck with incredible bat speed into the stands at wide long-on.<\/p>\n
But spinner Will Jacks had a charging Sooryavanshi stumped by Jos Buttler as the batter lost his balance.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels weird to say that I\u2019m playing against someone seven years younger than me, but he is an unbelievable talent,\u201d said Bethell of Sooryavanshi.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe swing he has is so pure.\u201d <\/p>\n
ndia captain Shreyas Iyer said Sooryavanshi was \u201cfearless\u201d, adding: \u201cThe way he approaches his game, it\u2019s sensational to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n
Abishek Sharma looked dangerous before he holed out off Sam Curran for 43, with the left-arm paceman also removing Ishan Kishan (49) and Shivam Dube (five) on his way to 3-33.<\/p>\n
Arshdeep Singh then gave had England openers Phil Salt and Buttler caught for ducks in the first over of the chase before England white-ball captain Harry Brook counter-attacked with 39 in 15 balls.<\/p>\n
With 49 required off 24 balls, England had work to do until Bethell\u2019s assault on Bishnoi.<\/p>\n
