\u201cLate night television, as we have known it since around 1950, is going to disappear,\u201d the former late night talk show host said Saturday during his induction speech<\/a> at the Television Academy Hall of Fame ceremony. <\/p>\n

Despite his dire prediction, O\u2019Brien added a message of hope. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut those voices are not going anywhere. People like Stephen Colbert are too talented \u2015 and too essential \u2015 to go away. It\u2019s not going to happen,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not going anywhere,\u201d O\u2019Brien added. \u201cStephen is going to evolve and shine brighter than ever in a new format that he controls completely.\u201d<\/p>\n

CBS said it was canceling<\/a> \u201cThe Late Show\u201d in a shocking announcement<\/a> last month. The show began in 1993 with host David Letterman, who stayed on until 2015, at which point Colbert took it over. Colbert\u2019s stint as host will officially come to an end in May 2026. <\/p>\n

CBS has said the decision was made \u201cpurely for financial reasons amid the difficult late-night landscape.\u201d <\/p>\n

To fellow TV host Andy Cohen, the idea of canceling the show \u2015 without giving Colbert and his team a chance to make changes to improve its financial situation \u2015 spells the end for CBS<\/a>. <\/p>\n
